Can I change insurers while a claim is outstanding?

We had a leak over the Christmas holidays, and we've informed our insurers. The claim is currently outstanding, it's very early days. Our house insurance is due for renewal at the end of this month, and the renewal quote is significantly higher than last year's premium.

Can I switch insurers while I still have an outstanding claim? Part of my problem is I don't know what the value of the claim will be yet, so have just put a guessed amount into that question for quotes.

And also if I switch insurers and the claim remains outstanding at the date of switch, who then deals with the claim?

The claim will be with the provider of the insurance at the time of the claim. You paid them for the cover therefore the risk is with your old provider and they will deal with it.

You can, but having an open claim on your previous insurance is likely to spike your premiums quoted by any insurer. AIUI you have to disclose to possible new insurers that the claim hasn't been settled yet.

Ah OK, thanks so much for that.
