Has anyone done the couch to 5k challenge?

Was it effective for getting someone who never runs to run a 5k after the 9 weeks of following the plan precisely?

Yes! Started with a friend in September and by December we were running (well, if you can call it that) 6k each time! Three times a week.

Go for it. The hardest thing is to just keep going - but if I can do it, anyone can.

Yep, worked brilliantly. I carried on after in my own time, just extending the run when I felt able, and made it up to 10k within six months.

Then I stopped due to health issues, and restarting running a year later I could still do a (very slow!) 5k, I was so pleased! Apparently running muscles stick around longer than you'd expect.

I used Get Running on the iPhone. They're all much of a muchness, just pick one that gets good reviews and stick with it if it works right for your first session - don't shop around too much or you'll throw off the training.

Yes, although I found it got me running for 30 mins, but that wasn't quite enough for 5k for me. However, I've done it a few times, and now am perfectly capable of jogging a 5k pretty much anytime with little training. I probably run a couple of times a month, so not loads, but can happily trot along a slow 5k (it takes me approx 33 mins).

I used the NHS app.

I coach couch to 5k, it’s a brilliant tool to get you running. I recommend the NHS app / podcast or even better joining a group if you have one locally (a lot of running clubs do it now).
