Where would you like to live when you retire?

Having seen what life is like for elderly relatives, I reckon I'll want to make sure I live somewhere on or near a lively high street. Screw quiet and leafy, if I'm not going to be able to drive and/or not very mobile for years I'll wanted to be within shuffling distance of a number of shops and services so I'm not stranded in my home.

The Barbican.

MrsApplepants · 06/01/2020 22:00

Another vote for the Barbican here. Also a pipe dream...

Strokethefurrywall · 06/01/2020 22:05

Ecuador 🇪🇨 Apparently Mecca for retirees, it's the next Costa Rica!

Perfect por moi!

TheGriffle · 06/01/2020 22:06

SisterAgatha · 06/01/2020 22:07

Brighton

ButterflyRuns · 06/01/2020 22:09

A pretty and quiet area, but still with all the amenities of a high street nearby and hopefully not too far from loved ones.

TimeAfterTimeAfter · 06/01/2020 22:09

I see your Ecuador and I raise you guatemala. Not in the killy bits though.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/01/2020 22:11

Fantasy- Florida

Real life - Devon, in the village near top where DH's ashes were scattered.

TimeAfterTimeAfter · 06/01/2020 22:13

Although the Barbican would be awesome.

True story, first time I went to a concert there me and my friend got hopelessly lost and ended up wandering around the residential bit. We asked this posh looking gent where the concert hall was and he replied along the lines that he honestly didn't know despite living there because the layout was so confusing and all he did was follow the sequence of colour coded lines that he knew led to his flat due to fear that any deviation would result in him eternally circling concrete walls.

French Alps. Was a plan but might be too difficult for us now thanks to Brexit as we don't have loads of money.

Keynsham. Nice high St, relatively flat, green spaces. Everything I'll need in my dotage.

TerpsichoreanMuse · 06/01/2020 22:20

Weirdly I was googling places with the best climate and Ecuador was pretty much top of the list.

AhoyMrBeaver · 06/01/2020 22:21

Majorca.

Bsmirched · 06/01/2020 22:23

By the sea, with several golden retrievers.

LexCake · 06/01/2020 22:26

Shrewsbury

Mixitupalot · 06/01/2020 22:28

On the coast, not sure where though.

feliciabirthgiver · 06/01/2020 22:31

Another vote for Florida but off to google Ecuador....

Poetryinaction · 06/01/2020 22:32

By the sea. And swim in it every day until I can't anymore.

Echobelly · 07/01/2020 14:52

Agree about the Barbican - you'd never be bored! I've got quite good at finding my way around there.

Sadly I'm not sure you'd see any spare change between selling our 4 bed suburban terrace and even the tiniest flat there!

I am thinking about Keynsham too. Seems to have a lot of amenities within walking distance.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/01/2020 15:08

West end of Glasgow

toomuchtooold · 07/01/2020 15:14

I might go back to my hometown near Glasgow - it's got plenty of amenities, it's cheap and it's not half as stabby as its reputation.

My kids (7yo twins) have just informed me that when they grow up they're going to move to Scotland, buy a house together and have dogs and ponies. So I'm thinking just down the road from them would be ideal...

Brittany, we have a holiday home there and can't wait to retire there. The beautiful beach is 20 mins a way, supermarket and GP nearby and the most wonderful green scenery out of our window. We look out of bedroom window on to a field with 2 horses in and can walk on a green route into near town 2k away.
