Meter reading says I've used £700 of gas in 2.5 months!!

Help! I have always had relatively low bills for gas and electric, I'm careful (and menopausal so normally too hot!) and try to keep an eye on things. I changed suppliers a few months ago..all seemed fine. However, they have just requested a meter reading and the gas one is astronomically high, ridiculously different to any reading I've ever had. It was so high the website wouldn't let me enter my reading, it refused it! I called them and was told maybe I needed to review the tariff Im on. I was hoping they would say that they better check my meter! Can I dispute the reading?? It's just so much money and so out of my normal pattern of usage.

daft question maybe but have you read it correctly and not the numbers in red or after the dot?

dementedpixie · 06/01/2020 17:08

What sort of meter is it? If it had dials have you read them properly? Have you checked the meter reading at the start is correct

Is your meter an imperial one or a metric one? Have they mixed it up?

Sorry, should have said, it's a smart meter so easy to read. Wierdly, they comapny have said that the readings for gas weren't coming through to them, only the electric ones were. No idea if that's relevant.

Have you also noted down the zero ( if there is one) at the start/left hand of the Digital display. In a rush i omitted it once and got a incredible bill as a result Shock
Once i realised i contacted them and resubmitted the reading .No problem.

I've checked and everything seems right, other than this huge surge in gas usage.

Yes it could possibly a glitch Op.
I hope you have this sorted soon.

Athyrium · 06/01/2020 17:18

Shouldn't they check for a leak or something?? (Not noticed a smell tho.)

Athyrium · 06/01/2020 17:22

Can you check the previous Bill's, and this bill, and check everyone is using the same units (cubic m, cubic ft, kWh, and also the bill matches the units on the meter.

Can you switch off all gas stuff for a couple of hours, and see if the meter goes up?
