Can South Africa be done last minute?

Its been on my bucket list ages and I’ve Found some quite good flight deals in the next couple of months.

Has anyone ever done Cape Town/the Garden route and not booked safari/activities/hotels months in advance and it’s been okay? I’m so tempted!

I hope so as we booked on Christmas eve to go in 2 weeks! I found game reserves the hardest to get availability for but we needed one which took children. Cape Town and garden route accommodation has been fine so far.

Yep, I did it a couple of years ago. Not too last minute but just through disorganisation! We did an internal flight to Port Elizabeth, stayed near Addo elephant park for first 2 nights and saw elephants, zebra, antelope etc. Then did a couple of nights in Knysna and saw the lovely hiking trail with the rope bridge (can't remember the name sorry), then on to Stanford in the wine region for whale watching and De Hoop sand dunes, then Cape Town for 5 nights and finally back to Franschoek for the last couple of nights (loved doing wine tastings and sitting outside with a cheese and charcuterie board) before an easy drive back to Cape Town airport.

One of our best holidays. Accommodation and food are cheap and easy. Incredibly friendly helpful people, the Garden Route is such an established route that roads are dead easy. We took a mobile wifi router to get sat nav and use TripAdvisor so we could make things up as we went along
