Bleeding after sex, can someone talk me down!

Bit of back story, i came off the pill back in the summer. I have been on it on and off for 10 years and decided to give my body a break. Roll on 6 months and still no period. However the last time I came off it (about 4 years ago) it took 9 months for everything to go back to normal so I wasn’t very concerned. I did see the nurse about it in October but she said it’s perfectly normal to take a while and not to worry.

2 weeks ago I had sex and once we were finished, we realised there was blood on the sheets. I know a little
Blood can go a long way but there was a large bright red patch of blood on the sheet, plus blood on my legs/dp. I assumed that my period had decided to start at the worst time but I was just glad it had come back. I bled for the rest of the day and a slight bit into the next day then nothing.

However we have had sex 2 times since then and the same thing has happened. The last time was yesterday morning and there was a lot of blood, it was all over the bed. Obviously I am going to contact my doctors first thing tomorrow but I am completely panicking. I am in my late 20’s with a ds and all I can think is cancer (Dr Google is the worst thing to look at!). My smear is up to date, I don’t have any signs of infection and last time I had an STI check was 2 years just before I met dp and it was clear. I trust him 100% so can’t imagine it’d be anything like that.

Has anyone had this and knows what it could be? I just feel sick about how much blood was there yesterday. Thanks for reading and sorry about the TMI!

I have had bleeding after sex for a long time. Apparently it's due to something called an ectropion, where fragile uterine cells make their way down to the cervix, and being so fragile, they bleed during and after intercourse. It's a common side effect of being on the pill for a long time apparently. A nurse spotted mine during a smear test. I've recently had cervical cryotherapy to try to stop the bleeding, will see how it goes

Do contact your doctor and get checked out but it may well not be anything sinister

Oh sweetheart, please don’t worry so much - understandable when you see blood but it’s much more likely to be a sign of something benign like cervical erosion or ectropion (common after so long on the pill). I’ve read about fragile womb lining (often caused by long term pill usage too) also causing some bleeding. Go to your GP and ask for an ultrasound to put your mind at rest, and get them to examine your cervix at the appt. too. I recently went for an ultrasound and the sonographer said that unexplained vaginal bleeding was the most common reason people got referred there, so it’s not unusual.

Since your smear’s up to date, if it were something more serious, it’s also very unlikely to have developed much as cervical cancer is one of the slowest to progress. Plus 20s would be very young.
Good luck at the GP and in the meantime remember the odds are you’ll be absolutely fine! Brew

I had the same cervix issue as the previous poster. Also discovered later that I had cysts on one ovary which can cause irritation.

If your smear is up to date then try to put your mind at rest. Make an appointment with your GP. From my smear to having gynae appointment was 13 months Crown Hmm

Xpost Lotta!

I've had the same thing. Thankfully my smear is all up to date so not concerned it's anything sinister.
But have a Gynaecologist appointment end of Jan.... Been waiting 6 months for it! So I'm glad my smear is up to date or I'd have been worrying this whole time.

Anyway, try not to panic. Bleeding can happen for a lot reasons xx

Dhalandchips · 01/01/2020 09:41

Another ectropion here too... I've got a long history of dodgy smears so I thought the worst initially but after they did biopses(again) all is OK. Try not to worry too much Flowers

Thank You everyone, you have really calmed me down. I’m hoping because it came on so suddenly and apart from the lack of periods I haven’t ever had any problems gynae wise that it is something as simple. I will ring the doctors first thing tomorrow and let you know how I get on. Thanks again Flowers

Hi OP, your doctor will probably give you an internal examination, then you'll be referred for a colposcopy. I've had bleeding after sex a couple of times and it was down to a small cervical polyp.

funmummy48 · 01/01/2020 10:30

I've had this on two separate occasions and it was caused by a polyp each time. I had them removed and the bleeding stopped. Don't panic. 💐

I’ve got an appointment for this morning so I’ll let you know how it goes Brew

How did it go OP? Very brave of you to have faced up to things so decisively.

HoHoHomeTimeFinally · 02/01/2020 18:09

It went ok, I starting bleeding quite heavily when she put the spectrum in but she couldn’t see a source of the bleeding. She has taken some swabs and has referred me for a scan. I don’t think she really listened to me though as when she saw the blood from the spectrum she said oh you’re bleeding quite heavily, hopefully
This is a period. But I’d been for a wee literally 5 minutes before and there hadn’t been a spec of blood so it was obviously from the examination but she seemed to think the bleeding was somehow positive?!? But I am glad I went to at least get the ball rolling and will wait for the results of the swabs to come

Hope you’re not waiting too long for the results 🤞

velourvoyageur · 02/01/2020 19:13

Ok, great you’re getting a scan.
If it is an ectropion then it would make sense that your cervix would bleed when prodded. In any case it’s not a ‘new’ additional thing is it, just the same symptom as before.
(I bled during two cervical exams last year and my scan was fine btw.)
