PIP car tax help please - just lost my enhanced rate mobility

Gahh I've just received the results of my PIP review and they've only awarded standard rate mobility rather than the enhanced rate I had before. Has this happened to anyone else? Can you help please?

  • my car is currently disabled tax class with free car tax - is it now untaxed?? What do I do??
  • I'm going to ask for a mandatory reconsideration as I don't agree but assume I have to sort the car now.

So fed up and anxious, and DH is at work so can't help.

Oh that's a crappy christmas present Sad

Yes you need to tax the car:

If the exemption no longer applies
If you don’t use the vehicle as described above or the disabled person is no longer entitled to free disabled tax, you must tax the vehicle in the appropriate tax class.
This can be done at a Post Office that deals with vehicle tax.
You will need:
• the V5C or the new keeper slip (green slip) and a V62
• an MoT/GVT (if applicable)
• the appropriate fee (if applicable).
Vehicles registered with a NI address also need an insurance certificate valid on the day the tax starts.

Good luck with your MR. Presumably if you're successful and your PIP gets backdated you'll be able to claim back the tax.

It says in the link above that you have to pay half the normal tax rate if you are only entitled to standard rate.

So sorry to hear this op

Definitely appeal. They seem to try it on and force you to jump through hoops.. 😏

OP, glad to see you've had some advice.
We had the same problem, but the other way round, we had always paid the full rate, and then when DW was granted standard rate mobility for PIP, we found out that we only had to pay half. You are right to say that they make it as hard as possible.
You have two choices - unfortunately you can't claim the half payment at your local post office, it has to be done by post to Cardiff, you send off all your documentation and your pip award letter and a cheque for the amount. It takes around 10 working days and no, you can't drive the car until you see on the DVLA website that it has been successfully taxed.
If you need to use the car immediately, you can pay the full amount (ouch) and then claim 50% back by post by the previous method.
Good luck with your appeal.
