They are quite content with the nightly terrorising of human children (because they don’t terrorise their own monster children AFAIK) to fuel their city with scream. They don’t switch to laughter out of concern or some sort of enlightenment, it just happens to be more powerful - it’s a simple business decision. They’re still adults (albeit monsters) dropping in on small children each night, unbeknownst to the parents, to exploit them for their laughter in order to fuel their city.

It’s insane, really. I do like it though
