Whatsapp no longer supported on WIndows phone - anyone else in this position?

My current Windows phone will stop supporting Whatsapp on 31st December - this is so annoying. When I download Whatsapp on a new phone (waiting in the wings), will I lose everything currently on my Whatsapp - contacts, message threads, etc? I'm crap with technology and so nervous of anything new.

It'll be the same phone number, just swapping over the SIM card.

What's confusing me is that at the moment my usual SIM card is in another Windows phone, but I'm still able to use Whatsapp on the phone without a SIM - can't get my head round this at all! How can this be??

How can this be??

Whatsapp uses the internet, not the phone signal.

will I lose everything currently on my Whatsapp

No. When you log in your account will probably have the same info. I say probably because I'm only forty, so too young to have experience using a Windows phone.

You won’t lose your archived WhatsApp, no.

I switched from a Windows phone to an Android one last year. I couldn't get Whatsapp to back up (can't remember if this was a general Windows phone issue or just a problem with my phone) so I did lose all the chats that were on my old phone.

Make sure you save/take screenshots of photos and anything else you want to keep just in case. You can also email chat archives to yourself.

You will lose all your history unless you move it across yourself. You have to do an archive and move the backup file across from the Windows phone to your new phone. It's a bit of a faff, so here's what looks like good clear instructions for getting the backup file, and then getting it onto a new Android phone:

Were you the one who posted about it and had been buying second hand windows phones online to stick with it? Surely there aren't 3 recent WP users in MN?

NoHummus · 25/12/2019 09:54

Er no, that wasn't me. And by the way I'm under 40 just! Wink

They're not that uncommon, and a lot of the Nokia and Sony ones were really good quality so they're just reaching end of life now as the (few!) apps age out like Whatsapp is.

Despite being all Apple here, I always rather liked the Windows phones. Far nicer to use than Android and excellent integration with Windows computers. It's a shame there isn't a viable third phone OS.

SpoonBlender - thanks, will have a look at that. It does feel like a massive faff and I'm irritated that everything is changing. I hate change!

All the whatsapp photos seem to store with my other photos so they should be ok, but who knows??

Thanks for all replies.
