Kids amazon fire HD: to set up or not to set up?

I’ve bought these for my youngest 2 this year. Being organised for once, they’re wrapped ready for Christmas Day. It’s just occurred to me that they may not be as ready as I thought... do I need to unwrap to charge them now? Do I need to set them up? I’m no good with tech and don’t fancy landing myself with hours of work setting them up on Christmas Day, but similarly if I can get away with leaving it for now that’d be great as I’ve loads still to do!

Yep - Unwrap and set up. We did yours last week before wrapping. You’ll thank yourself!

I didn't set up or charge the first kindle fire we got and regretted it.

Yes definitely get them set up. Then you can just switch them on and leave them to it!

Yes, definitely set up, we’ve just done this too, fear not it was really straightforward and all packed back together nicely in the box before I wrapped it.

Damn. Looks like that’s my evening planned then! Any tips?

Link to wifi update then install ther favourite apps if you know them dont link your Amazon account to it or they can buy stuff

We didn't set ours up latest year. It was fine, but if you can do it in advance it saves time on the day!

If I recall you 'follow the bouncing ball' instructions, give your DC usernames and link it to your Amazon account. If you've got older DC they might be able to help you, I roped techy BIL into doing one for me and getting the settings and restrictions set up.

We got a years free subscription which was great. If you want to cancel the subscription after the free bit is up (I did) you need to logon via a laptop or PC and use their customer services chat facility.

Definitely set up . I did my daughters before wrapping. Takes a while to set up.

Definitely set up. We got the kids unlimited subscription for my DD when we got her first Kindle Fire.

  • get wifi on there
  • set up kids unlimited profile or parental controls on an adult profile, depending what you're doing
  • I put a 4 digit pin (DD's year of birth) just to stop her younger sibling getting on there
  • download a few apps/books to get them started on Christmas morning (and leave you in peace for a bit without nagging you to get the wifi going and download stuff).
  • leave it charging while you're doing the above.

You can also get Amazon to call you back if you get stuck... www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/contact-us/ref=hp_201712320_socu_cu?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 This was super helpful when I was setting up the Kindle for DD as we'd never had one before and I was a bit confused.

I've just set up DD's new Fire last night. She's having an adult profile with a parental control app so it was a bit more complicated to do. Plus I had a few game profiles and saved files to move from her old Kindle over!
