Sitting in hospital canteen listening to staff spouting racist rubbish

VivaLeBeaver · 23/12/2019 09:06

Thankfully canteen staff rather than nurses.

Usual Britain First type stuff. Talking about how by x year white people will be a minority and one saying how she can't say Great Britain anymore, only Britain. That it's no longer great because of the immigrants.

Is it the sort of thing Pals would deal with? Am I over reacting by thinking this isn't on?

No, this is not a PALs issue but an HR issue. Did you get names?

Gilead · 23/12/2019 13:23

@itwasalovelydream, any reason for dismissing racism and reducing it to an discussion’ ?

OhTheRoses · 23/12/2019 13:49

Such a shame people don't value equality in relation to all the protected characteristics.

Merry Christmas.

Nat6999 · 23/12/2019 14:48

Complain to Pals, those people would be the first to complain if they were treated badly. Just don't expect any miracles, at most they will get a slap on the wrist.

I'm a nurse and a few of us had a heated 'discussion' at work the day before the election ! Somebody mentioned that racism had got worse since brexit. A medic colleague very passionately disagreed, said he'd put up with random verbal abuse all his life, certainly wasn't a multicultural tolerant utopia prior to 2016 ! Apparently most of the nurses he worked with voted leave but now denied it ! Once he'd left the room 2 office staff, perfectly nice decent people, but one a bit of a closet brexiteer, blatantly started ranting on about how the country was rammed full with migrants, how schools were full up, gps couldn't cope..you couldn't make it up but very awkward to challenge them Blush

Patroclus · 23/12/2019 15:12

Awww man I wish we could tag 'white people posting the dictionary definition of racism' on here.

Abraid2 · 23/12/2019 15:17

It annoys me that people don’t understand that Great doesn’t mean anything other than the largest island in the British Isles. It doesn’t mean wonderful. Just like The Great War meaningful a huge conflict.

Sewrainbow · 23/12/2019 18:46

In an nhs clinic employer and I would say report to pals or the catering manager/hospital management. It is inappropriate to discuss in work time, when customers need serving and could upset other patients and staff

BerwickLad · 23/12/2019 18:56

Well obviously you don't agree with them; I don't either, as it goes. But unless you think they should lose their (low paid with not a chance of influencing policy) jobs I wouldn't bother reporting tbh. If they were actually being abusive or racist to an individual then yes, absolutely, but not for just jawing off while at work.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 23/12/2019 19:02

The trust I work for would take this incredibly seriously, I’d be interested to know what hospital it is...I’d be happy to flag to my superiors if it were at our place. This kind of discussion should never be happening let alone in front of patients.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 23/12/2019 19:13

I don’t think how much they are paid is relevant really. If they are in their uniform discussing it in a patient area, then they should expect to be pulled up on it. Even as a band 2 this should be obvious.

gamerwidow · 24/12/2019 08:09

What they are paid is relevant. People visiting a hospital should feel welcome and comfortable regardless of their race or nationality. These people were creating an environment where not everyone could feel comfortable. You don’t get a free racism pass just because you are low paid.

gamerwidow · 24/12/2019 08:10

Gah should be what they are paid is irrelevant. But you get my point I hope.

Iggly · 24/12/2019 08:12

Why awkward?

Our schools and GPS can’t cope because the Tories have cut services via austerity.

This wasn’t such an issue pre 2010. But as public services have been stretched thin people blame immigration when actually the government has made the choice to give less for all of us.

While the rich keep the spoils.

Somanysocks · 24/12/2019 10:24

@HJWT charming, what a sweeping generalisation. You sound lovely Confused

x2boys · 24/12/2019 12:02

Yes every single English person is lazy and gets food orders wrong ,generaliseation much ? @HJWT with your attitude I'm not surprised nobody wanted to talk to youHmm

Sarzy82 · 24/12/2019 13:48

Do these idiots know that wasn't why Great Britain is called Great Britain?

YouJustDoYou · 24/12/2019 14:00

Non whites and historically immigrant family here. No extra racism, personally, at all.

The whole "Britain not Great Britain" thing is hilarious seeing as all of the British population are basically mixed with invaders from over several thousand years worth of invasion etc. Anyway. If they're scared of the British way of life being eroded that's an understandable worry but I'm betting none of them are actually friends with an "immigrant". I'd still report them though - seriously unprofessional, not to mention causing distress to patients etc hearing it.

YouJustDoYou · 24/12/2019 14:03

and the other week my son was in hospital not one english person struck up a conversation with me the only person other than staff that spoke to me in length was a lovely polish woman

They could probably sense the stuck up arrogant attitude emanating from out of you so avoided you at all costs 😆
