How long for flies to go after dead rat?

Have been getting big blue bottle / black flies one at a time about every hour during today. Neighbours loft was treated for rats last week. No evidence found in our loft space last week and DH has checked today and no sign of anything. We have had something die in the loft about 5 years ago and it started like this -sporadic single flies, as it was in the loft last time we could seal it up and blast with fly spray but we don't seem to be able to find where it is this time, but I'm fairly sure we have a dead something somewhere. I'm terrified the flies are going to suddenly be hundreds (experience from dead pigeon in another house years ago) and that the timing will mean it will be Christmas Eve or Christmas Day when they hit. We are here for Christmas this year for the first year and have so been looking forward to it. 2 of our 3 dc are not good with flies at the best of times but a house full of flies on Christmas Day is going to be horrific. We've had a rough ride with one thing or another the past couple of years and was looking forward to the chance to all just chill together and now this. Given we don't know where they are coming from (have closed all doors to try and help with this, so looking like it could be upstairs hall cupboard or floorboards. Annoyingly it is an old house with gaps around some of the doors so might not help with locating anyway.) is there any way we can treat this before the deluge?! Gosh that was a long, rambled post, thanks for sticking with me if you got to the end!!!

Do you have chimneys? It could be a dead bird.

Thanks, books - we do have chimneys but they're capped off at the top Confused
