Sons ears ‘popping’ for no reason... anyone had this?

My teenage son is complaining his ears are blocked then they ‘pop’ after a while (Usually when he eats it drinks) and he’s ok but it keeps happening again and again over the last 3 days or so. He has a cold but not any fever or pain with it, he also has ASD so it’s hard to know if it’s actually a problem or just feels different and he doesn’t like it.

This happened once before and I took him to the docs who looked and said there was nothing wrong but do you think I should take him again this time? He thinks that the doc shining her torch in there cured him last time so he keeps asking to go but I really don’t want to waste a day waiting in a room of people who might have germs if there is no need - what do you think?

Any experience of ‘poppy’ ears when you have a cold much appreciated TIA

I had this when I was pregnant, everytime I went outside weirdly. Dr said it was the tube between nose and ears getting blocked which could happen with a cold too I guess

Blocked sinuses cause this. Even slightly blocked. I sometimes only realise my they are blocked when my ears start popping then sniff some Sudafed and realise i can now actually breathe. Think you get used to not breathing through nose properly if you a prone to blocked sinuses.

I get this and it’s always wax. I think the ball of wax can move on and off the ear drum and cause the popping. I don’t always get deafness with it snd they don’t feel waxy.

Plenty of decongestants - medications or steam / eucalyptus as you prefer. The tube that goes from your middle ear to the back of your throat gets inflamed when you've got a cold.

I have clicky, poppy ears. Sometimes one will randomly turn off and whistle. I had a long history of ear infections in childhood.

Ok thanks all - sounds like it’s all fairly normal then. I think we will deal with it at home, I don’t want to waste our time or the docs and he doesn’t seem in pain just a bit annoyed. Hope you all have a Happy healthy Christmas Grin
