How can you tell the age of an Ikea product?

Last month I bought a Billy bookcase from Ikea and I want to buy some more shelves. As it was secondhand I'm not sure how old it is and which shelves will fit. There's a label on the back but I can't decipher the code. Help!

How can you tell the age of an Ikea product?

Found the shelf supports on ebay (thank you @thereinmadnesslies)

Does this mean if I buy a new style shelf it will now fit?

The four numbers are the code to when the item left the factory.....called the ‘date stamp’ 0949 is 2009, Week 49. It’s the regular calendar weeks...1 starts on first Sunday of Jan....so week 49 is Nov/Dec

@DramaAlpaca
Off subject but since we’re on Ikea - did you dismantle your billy bookcases when you moved house ? I’ve been wondering if they’ll survive a move - I have the tall ones (3yrs) 🙃

GiantKitten · 19/12/2019 10:04

Gardai, I’ve shifted 4 tall Billys (in pairs) in a Zafira.

So yes, they are very movable Smile

@Darrensy thanks!

@GiantKitten excellent! Turns out the Ikea sale starts today so an overnight delay will have saved me ££££

I've recently bought extra shelves for an old BIlly, the new pegs are a bit smaller than the older ones but once you e gotbthe shelf pnots fine. Didn't know you could still get the old pegs, might have to look into that for next time.

@Gardai I've taken my Billy bookshelves to Australia, three months in a shipping container and.......all the way back again another three months.

Count the rings?

Some of ours have survived moving country four times with another house move in between in the past nine years. A bit shaky now... The talker ones have survived better than the short ones

Our shelves are a mix of the two types and we hadn't noticed a difference in hole size.
