Please, how do I shorten the duration of the bastard cold?

I've woken up this morning feeling dreadful.

My nose is simultaneously blocked and dripping like a tap,
My throat and chest are raw from the coughing and the green stuff (I'm sorry!) is making me feel sick.
My teeth hurt and feel like they've got a tonne of pressure on them because of my sinuses.
Oddly, I have no temperature, shivers or any other sigh of illness - it's just the signs of the upper respiratory virus.

Please, do you have any magical cures to make this go away?
I have so much to do before Christmas and if I don't do it it won't get done. What can I do? Xmas Sad

The horse has now bolted....but have you been taking a Vitamin D supplement this winter?

ChipInTheSugar · 18/12/2019 16:14

Day Nurse/Night Nurse and lots of fluids.

Eloisedublin123 · 18/12/2019 16:15

Vitamins and zinc lozenges. Drink as much fresh orange juice as you can stomach.

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 18/12/2019 16:25

Raw garlic, vit C and zinc, lots of water/hot drinks.

BeyondMyWits · 18/12/2019 16:38

Lots of fluid, stay warm - be aware that coughing up green stuff can be a sign of a chest infection.

InterviewTerminated · 18/12/2019 16:44

Gargling with TCP is good for a sore throat.

Fishflame · 18/12/2019 16:46

Ugh I had this recently and it lasted about a week...

Ibuprofen, Beechams cold and flu capsules and plenty of fluids...

nancy75 · 18/12/2019 16:50

Vicks sinus spray, it clears your nose which means you can sleep properly, lack of sleep when I have a cold is awful

peachypetite · 18/12/2019 16:53

Lemsip and bed. Try not to stress

Khione · 18/12/2019 16:53

Massive dose of vitamin C (Docs say it doesn't work but it has for me. Needs to be enough to give you diarrhoea though. I got over a stinker in 3 days) plus zinc to boost your immune system. Vitamin D also boosts immune and should reduce recurrence.

Lots and lots of hot/warm non alcoholic fluid.

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 18/12/2019 17:27

I've got vitamin c so will start dosing myself with serious amounts of that, will have to get some Zinc and a bulb of garlic tomorrow.

Trying to drink loads of water anyway to try and loosen up whatever is on my chest, but I hate coughing because it's so sore.
My chest and throat are raw Sad

I've got TCP so can gargle that. I'm honestly willing to try absolutely anything!

I wish I could just go back to bed but unfortunately DP is flat out with work and other stuff and I have a DD, sleep is non-existent at bedtime - let alone any other time.

Steam your head under a towel over a sink of boiling water with a touch of Vicks (be careful as too much and your eyes will burn like fuck!!!). Do it a few times today and tomorrow. Also hot bath with sea salt, and loads of fluids. Rest as much as possible.

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 18/12/2019 17:54

Oh @Cecilandsnail I didn't think of that! Will be doing that once DD is in bed, I need some olbas bubble bath - that should help a bit too.
Thank you.

What works for me is lots of fruit on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. Tea with honey to soothe throat. Also, lots of warm water throughout the day. Avoid sugar at all costs. Hope you get better soon.

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 19/12/2019 11:53

Okay, been to the Docs this morning because my chest and cough have just been getting worse.

Left with a weeks supply of antibiotics Sad bugger.

BeyondMyWits · 19/12/2019 12:01

oh, I'm glad you went... coughing up green stuff is never really a good sign...

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 19/12/2019 13:18

@BeyondMyWits thank you! That's true, but I thought I could maybe ride it out.
Now I'm stuck on antibiotics Sad hoping to feel normal ASAP Xmas Sad

I had this virus.

This really worked for me:

Also lots of sleep.

Please, how do I shorten the duration of the bastard cold?
twolungs · 19/12/2019 16:02

Ah yes also steam for 5 minutes 4 times a day ( a nurse's recommendation).

Otrivine nasal spray or Neilmar Sterimed is also good.

Scarscar · 19/12/2019 16:05

If you can get it, black elderberry syrup or tablets, like Sambucol.

I also take Olive Leaf Extract from Seventh wave.
