It has nothing to do with day and night OP! It’s to do with its orbit and the fact that it is a new moon.

Just nipped outside and can confirm Moon is no where to be seen on this side of the world

Well yes it will be a moonless sky in Australia. Crescent moons are the opposite flipped left-right in the sky as well.
