Surely it can't be considered northern

It’s north of London, so it’ll do as far as they’re concerned Grin

BerwickLad · 14/12/2019 13:51

Maybe it was Newcastle upon Tyne with an amended birth certificate due to how it identified. Don't be so judgy OP.

senua · 14/12/2019 13:51

Do you think that they got their Lyme and their Tyne mixed up?Hmm

JoanBonJovi · 14/12/2019 13:54

North to me

PullingMySocksUp · 14/12/2019 13:58

It’s in between Birmingham and Manchester so nearly north. It’s only a bit further south than Sheffield.

FelicityBeedle · 14/12/2019 14:01

It’s the midlands at best, not the North at all. It’s insulting London centrism at its finest

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2019 14:02

Shit... Shit you're right. I'm not a good person. Sorry.

I don't know if they got mixed up (the person they interviewed did not sound northern) or if they genuinely think Staffordshire is the North. Just a stones throw away from Scotland.

Interesting - West Midlands?

I wouldn't say it's North - but it's nearly North...

But the North is a big place. We aren't all the same up here.

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2019 14:04

You can argue it's northern if you like and depending on your perspective you may have a point. But to describe it as "the north" particularly on a news article about voting and brexit seems a bit daft.

It's close to Stoke - the voxpop capital of England. But, not Stoke so no accusations of always going to Stoke.

Can you argue it as a place that voted Leave, was Labour and felt ignored and left behind?

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2019 14:08

I don't know, maybe that's true.

wellthatwasthat · 14/12/2019 14:09

No London centrism at all - just someone a bit thick when it comes to geography.

Anyway... where does 'The Midlands' stop and 'The North' start - exactly???

Chloemol · 14/12/2019 14:11

What do you think is north then?

Actually who cares

BlueThursday · 14/12/2019 14:12

Clearly never heard of Kirkwall then

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2019 14:13

Yes Staffordshire probably is the top of the Midlands in the West. Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire further over.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2019 14:14

I suppose its because when they said Newcastle I expected to hear a geodie accent. 200 miles further north than I got.

fairydustandpixies · 14/12/2019 14:22

I've moved around a bit, currently live in the south. 'Oop North' is anything north of Watford 😂😂 (And that's being generous!)

Firecarrier · 14/12/2019 14:26

I live there, it is The Midlands!

MikeUniformMike · 14/12/2019 14:29

It's the Midlands. A lot of the vox pop was recorded there.

Cheshire is North-West, Shropshire and Staffordshire are North Midlands.

GoKartMozart · 14/12/2019 14:38

I'm from the area and most folk here consider us 'the Midlands'. For me Northern begins around Manchester.

StealthPolarBear · 14/12/2019 14:41

Fairydustandpixies I suspect you've never lived in the north :)

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 14/12/2019 14:49

Where they do the vox pop depends on which view they want to put across.

They tend to be from places with a strong regional accent.

Novembernickname · 14/12/2019 15:22

I'm from there and I have always considered myself a northerner so do lots of people I know.

SilverySurfer · 14/12/2019 15:52

Of course it's North, unless you live north of it.
