Rylan to cover election on Channel 4

I love this idea.

I know he's probably not a heavyweight in terms of electoral analysis but he could help draw in younger voters and give some light entertainment.

It's a ridiculous idea. He's about as qualified for the role as my dog. He's also completely insufferable.

SpiderCharlotte · 12/12/2019 13:29

@TheStaleBiscuitofDoom well, luckily, Channel 4 is not the only channel covering the general election. So you have, you know, a choice which channel you wish to watch. As do other people who may hold a different view to you.

TheStaleBiscuitofDoom · 12/12/2019 13:31

SpiderCharlotte

As someone who has a different view to you on the subject of Rylan presenting the election coverage on Channel 4, I am allowed to express my opinion here.

bilbodog · 12/12/2019 13:34

Oh great - i like rylan and he might make me laugh on what is otherwise a shitty day 🤣

Hoppinggreen · 12/12/2019 13:39

I always thought he was rubbish ( never having really watched him) but I thought he was really funny on celebrity GBBO so will give him a go

PuppyMonkey · 12/12/2019 13:39

This is obviously good because you don’t see enough of Rylan on the telly imho.Confused

SnorkMaiden81 · 12/12/2019 13:41

I think an alternative election coverage is a nice idea, I'm not sure it'll be my staple for the night, but I might have a quick look. Good for them.

GingleJangleScarecrow · 12/12/2019 13:43

Perhaps posters should look up "alternative comedy".

SpiderCharlotte · 12/12/2019 13:45

I am allowed to express my opinion here.

I didn't at any time say, or imply, that you weren't.

Lots of people like him and won't think it's ridiculous or that he's 'insufferable'. I'm not fussed about him either way.

EssexGurl · 12/12/2019 13:47

Rylan is actually very into politics and tweets a lot about it, in quite an informed way. Must confess I’ve been surprised.

He will bring in younger viewers and make politics more accessible/relevant to them, which surely must be a good thing, given the way the current political climate is disfranchising people?

If you don’t like him, turn over, pretty much every other channel is doing GE coverage tonight.

TooMuchBloodyChoice · 12/12/2019 13:48

He's a fairly light weight presenter to host such a show. He's not a qualified journalist unlike a lot of presenters who are able to discuss a range of topics. As lovely as he seems he doesn't necessarily come across as a strong enough presenter for an area which is regularly very controversial, and where people hold such strong views.

If C4 wanted alternative comedy why not get an actual comedian?

I get its an alternative slant I'm just not sure he can carry that type of show, especially for several hours. It's very different to his usual shows and I kind of hope he proves me wrong.

TooLaidBack27 · 12/12/2019 13:49

Thanks for spreading the message, OP! Will definitely watch Ch 4. I love his presenting. He might not have the experience, but he has the gift of gaff! Looking forward to it.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 12/12/2019 13:51

Is it a role one needs to be qualified for?? Really?? 😂😂

StarbucksSmarterSister · 12/12/2019 13:52

I won't be able to watch. I find his teeth too distracting. Grin

SerendipityJane · 12/12/2019 13:58

Does Katherine Ryan not count ?

TooMuchBloodyChoice · 12/12/2019 14:03

I didn't realise it was with Katherine Ryan - that makes more sense - thought he was hosting on his own. I thought it would be like when he presented CBB's bit on the side - clearly I was way off the mark. I might give that a watch actually!

P1nkHeart - presenters do usually start out as journalists, so they are usually qualified, as you would need to be to handle such a role. Now I realise its not a serious show - I agree he wouldn't need to be qualified for the angle c4 want Grin

SerendipityJane · 12/12/2019 14:05

I didn't realise it was with Katherine Ryan

But you knew enough to pile in and give an opinion though ?

VanyaHargreeves · 12/12/2019 14:12

Rylan has found his calling as a presenter.

He is really a very good interviewer, and quite sharp witted. Genuinely witty.

His scenes with Nicole Scherzinger getting through on X Factor remain some of the most accidentally funny scenes British TV has ever produced.

AuntieMarys · 12/12/2019 14:19

As long as he doesnt involve his mother, I quite like this

SilverySurfer · 12/12/2019 14:21

I hadn't heard of him so googled - television personality says it all plus I have no wish to wear sunglasses while watching tv (to avoid the glare from his teeth) so think I'll give it a miss.

Sarcelle · 12/12/2019 14:23

Not a fan of his, he's harmless enough but on too much, but I heard him say months ago that he was addicted to the Parliament channel. So he does have an interest and they are going for the yoof viewer, innit.

SerendipityJane · 12/12/2019 14:25

He was on "WILTY" a while back (and I have to admit that as a non celeb/reality TV follower, I thought Who the fuck ? )

But not as irritating as some, as I recall.

HeIenaDove · 12/12/2019 15:48

Krishnan Guru Murphy is doing this coverage too.

SerendipityJane · 12/12/2019 15:54

Krishnan Guru Murphy is doing this coverage too.

Seems a far cry from the 2010 version with David Mitchell, Jimmy Carr, Charlie Brooker and someone else Grin. Which (if I recall correctly) morphed into "The 10 o'clock show" for a bit ?

EnidButton · 12/12/2019 16:13

He's a solid choice imo. Appealing, a fresh voice and he's politically engaged. He's also very clever and quick witted. Don't judge someone on their looks and accent.
