Where can I go for a snowy break, on a budget?

I have 2 young DC. They are desperate to see proper snow. I live in an area that rarely gets snow (last time was about 8 years ago I think). So if really like to take them away for a short break to somewhere properly snowy, where they can sledge and build snowmen. If such a place exists! Preferably not costing an absolute fortune!

Any ideas? Thank you.

The Alps? Austria?
Slovakia?

I don't really have a budget in mind, but can save up for next year.

To be more specific.. Zakopane outside krakow. Just avoid Christmas. Perhaps half term.. Much cheaper than many options...

Anywhere up a mountain in Austria will be excruciatingly expensive.
It’s the best and most exclusive skiing in Europe.

I grew up in the Cairngorms and we got snow every winter.

Having a budget is good because you’ll get guaranteed snow on the alps but it’s £££ a ballpark to work with is helpful

We went to the Black Forrest in Germany a few years ago... plenty of snow, sledging and easy ski slopes! Not forgetting the thermal bath... lovely!!
All done on a very tight budget... so cheap flights, car and holiday let. (needed car to get around).

It will be a low budget. Not Austria!

Black forest sounds promising.

Andorra. Lots to see and do plus skiing, skating, snowboarding, and oodles of crisp white snow perfect for snowballs and snowwo/men. Grin

Short flight to Girona or Barcelona. If it's a diy holiday book early for cheap easyjet deals and either hire a car or use public transport to get to your destination . Alternatively, book a cheap package holiday.

To my mind the best time to go is Christmas (I love a white one) followed by New Year in Barcelona or the Costa Brava or Dorada. Otherwise, any time in January and February.

It's also a great place to visit in summer when the heat and crowds on the Costas gets too much. A few days in the mountains can be immensely refreshing. Expect good food and good shopping - not quite the tax-free paradise it used to be, but cheaper than Spain/France.
