Biting the bullet and wanting to book a get away with husband and will-be 4 month old in Jan. Kent/South East preferably self catered apartment/lodge/quiet property in walking distance of restaurant and somewhere to wander. Thanks!

Leeds castle has self catered cottages in a lovely setting and there is a coffee shop and restaurant on the site.

Rye is nice (though they did seem to have rather a lot of cafes that ad notices telling you not to bring children in when ds was small, not sure it's like that now though).

You haven't said if you'd prefer self-catering or hotel/B&B but if you look at the www.bedandbreakfastnationwide.com/ website they have lots of nice B&Bs. The ideal is to find one that takes small kids and has a guest lounge so you can put baby to bed and then have a glass of wine in the lounge a few metres away (not at all like leaving a baby in a hotel room and going downstairs several floors!)

I have stayed here twice - they don't generally take children but may make an exception out of season for a babe in arms, definitely worth asking them, they can only say no and recommend somewhere else if not: www.oldvicarageryeharbour.co.uk/

If you are happy to go to Dorset instead of Kent/Sussex, you could also try www.dipperswestdorset.co.uk/ definitely child-friendly
