Hi can anyone suggest any decent board games for myself and DD8 nearly 9? I was thinking about exploding kittens but wondered if it would be too complicated for DD.

Monopoly Junior
Dobble
Jenga

LazyDaisey · 05/12/2019 07:58

the cat game was a huge hit last Xmas. It’s like Pictionary but using cat pictures.

Hive (2 player game)
Blockus (up to 4 players but fine for 2)
Qwirkle (have played with 6 players but 2 is also fine)
Carcassonne (up to 5 players, fine with 2)
Pylos (2 player game)

Backgammon?

horseymum · 05/12/2019 08:08

Was going to say Carcassonne, would grow with child as you can add new rules and extension sets. Can also be played by up to five if you have visitors.

fluffysocksgoodbookwine · 05/12/2019 08:09

Chess! There’s a set you can get called ‘no stress chess’ that uses cards to teach the moves of the different pieces, so you can change the difficulty level. DS started aged 5yrs and beat me in a straight game for the first time aged 9yrs Xmas Smile

Labyrinth, adult monopoly, adult cluedo, adult game of life. The kids versions really are for below 5 years. We’re trying Carcasonne and ticket to ride based on recommendations on here.

Ivegotnothing · 05/12/2019 08:15

We used to love frustration!

DartmoorChef · 05/12/2019 08:17

I was just about to say frustration too. It's the only game I remember playing with my mum as a kid.

MrsNoMopp · 05/12/2019 08:24

Scrabble
Triominoes
Othello

wishywashy6 · 05/12/2019 08:48

My 9yo loves scrabble, monopoly, frustration
Also dominoes and card games are very popular

bsc · 05/12/2019 08:56

Android Net Runner
Ticket To Ride (the original USA one is best)
Machi Koro
Quirkle
Scrabble
Lost Cities

Carcassonne and Labyrinth. Also a game called Sequence - which is like connect four on a board game where you have to get sequences of playing cards.

Skyjo which is a card game not board game.
Harry Potter game - this is one where you play together rather than competitively.
Forbidden Island - again you play together to collect all the symbols before the island sinks. Its quite a good one for listening to each other's suggestions.
Rummikub

00100001 · 05/12/2019 08:59

Castle Panic
Carcassonne
Ticket to Ride
King of Tokyo
Coloretto
Bohnanza
Lost Cities
Incan Gold

YesILikeItToo · 05/12/2019 09:04

Exploding Kittens is not too complicated. DD enjoys it with 2, but I can’t help feeling it would be more amusing with more.

We are enjoying Mancala at the moment - it is for 2 players and really quick, and there’s something nice about being able to just play again. More like playing noughts and crosses than playing Monopoly.

goodwinter · 05/12/2019 09:08

Carcassonne is my favourite board game, glad to hear it getting so many recommendations.

Fluxx is fast-paced and fun for kids, plus it has tons of themed versions - there's a chemistry one that will help kids learn their periodic table that my 9yo brother loves.

horseymum · 05/12/2019 09:17

Monopoly deal is the favourite card game, easy and quick to play. Good for two players or more.

LazyDaisey · 06/12/2019 09:17

I’ve always hated monopoly. Never ending dull fest. I quite like playing monopoly junior, which finishes when one of you runs out of money. I disagree it’s for 5 and younger. It gives the kids a fair chance of beating the adult.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 06/12/2019 09:24

Battleships/draughts are two games I loved playing with my dad.

He got really upset that I was better that draughts at him Grin

averythinline · 06/12/2019 09:28

depends on the child
but if you dont fancy chess then backgammon - its a game for life and easier to pick up than chess

Card games:
Sleeping Queens is good - says for 2 players plus and is quickish
Sushi Go & Gubz - but not sure about as 2 player
Carcassone - def a two player classic -

Hive is fab and the pieces lovely

I also bought a pack of cards and a book of games which was great to work through at that age....

Damntheman · 06/12/2019 09:55

King Domino
Tsuro
Dobble is a lot of fun :)
Second Carcasonne

TrophyCat · 06/12/2019 09:58

My 9 year old loves the following

Monopoly junior
Uno
Connect 4
Pass the pigs
Snakes and ladders

Kanga83 · 06/12/2019 10:02

Cludo junior which who stole the chocolate cake, connect 4, guess who

KittenVsXmastree · 06/12/2019 10:03

My 8 yr old likes carcassonne, labrinth, backgamon, rummikub, dobble. All playable as an adult.
Both kids like exploding kittens. I cant stand it.
