Luton or Gatwick for travel to London?

User1053051066 · 04/12/2019 00:45

I will be staying overnight at the north of the city, but the night I leave, I will be leaving from the city.

So, Luton may be slightly better for arrival (although I think I need to travel in to the city then back out?) but is Gatwick a better (more straightforward) choice for leaving?

Does this make sense??!

No it doesn’t make sense.

Longdistance · 04/12/2019 01:00

Which city?

LemonPrism · 04/12/2019 01:04

Always Gatwick

Do you mean the city as in The City of London? The square mile. Or the whole of London?

Adenosine · 04/12/2019 01:18

Yeah Gatwick.

User1053051066 · 04/12/2019 01:24

OK, sorry. I'm staying in Seven Sisters area for two nights. Arriving in the evening, going straight there. Spending each day in the city of London (see thread title) and on the last day, will have left Seven Sisters, spend the day in the city (tourist), then fly home.

So, I'm thinking Gatwck....?

I’d only use Luton if the air fare was significantly cheaper. You would most likely be going into central London and then out again for North London, so will be longer journey time than Gatwick. However, if you are willing to provide more precise details, you will get more precise advice.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/12/2019 01:34

They are both a pain in the arse from Seven Sisters. But Gatwick is a far better airport.

EBearhug · 04/12/2019 01:39

I've flown out of Luton then back to Gatwick before - just worked out cheaper that way. But the train to either is a similar time from me (assuming the connections work out okay; I can do neither direct.)

HeddaGarbled · 04/12/2019 01:45

Crosspost!

Gatwick then. It’s only about 20 minutes less journey time, but the Gatwick Express is more frequent than the trains into London from Luton.

You want the Gatwick Express (train) from the airport to Victoria Station, then the Underground (tube/subway), Victoria line to Seven Sisters.

Gemma2019 · 04/12/2019 01:52

Does it have to be either of those two? London City Airport is your closest airport to Seven Sisters.

SpaceCadet4000 · 04/12/2019 02:53

Gatwick. Much, much more convenient than Luton.

catlady3 · 04/12/2019 08:42

Stansted is convenient for Seven Sisters (express, then one stop on tube). Alternatively, Gatwick express or regular train to Victoria, the Victoria line. Avoid Luton if you can, rubbish on so many levels.

goingtotown · 04/12/2019 09:13

Seven Sisters to Tottenham Hale (10 minutes) Tottenham Hale to Stansted.

Davros · 04/12/2019 09:18

You can get a train to Gatwick from Kings X if you're in Central/North

User1053051066 · 04/12/2019 21:48

Thank you all very much, Gatwick it is. I do prefer Gatwick.
My airport does not fly to Stanstead or City so yes, it was a choice between these two.

Thanks again.

You can take a direct train on Thameslink (fairly new service) to/from Finsbury Park - Gatwick. Much cheaper than Gatwick Express.

Then ons stop to Seven Sisters on the Victoria Line.

Crunchymum · 04/12/2019 22:36

Can you do Stansted?

Lexplorer · 04/12/2019 22:40

Even though I live closer to Luton I would always choose Gatwick because of the frequency of travel options

Pippin2028 · 04/12/2019 23:27

I would say travelling out of the UK go for Gatwick, coming into the UK I would say roughly Gatwick / Luton offer same time via passport control/airport exit, time into London. Although I hate flying out of Luton, all the staff working there are fairly unhappy especially at security, its overcrowded and queues every where! I have been really shocked at the overcrowding in Luton at some times of day!

Longdistance · 04/12/2019 23:37

Luton is a bum to get to Seven sister’s. So LGW would be a better option.

goingtotown · 04/12/2019 23:45

A mile from Seven Sisters is Manor House Tube on the Piccadilly Line where you can get the Heathrow Express that takes you right into the terminal.
