Anyone around who knows the BSL alphabet please......?

Could anyone tell me if the signs on this vintage poster are true BSL ones please.

DD is learning a bit of BSL at uni and is into her vintage prints so I thought this would make a nice little gift if the signs are the ones still used today

I don't want to buy it and find that they're obsolete.

sign language print

Thank you

It doesn't look much like the sign language alphabet I learnt, although that was years ago itself.

MessEnoughClean · 30/11/2019 13:26

That wasn't the alphabet I learnt at adult ed a few years ago. The BSL one uses two hands

Tableclothing · 30/11/2019 13:26

Doesn't look right to me

It’s not the one I was taught a couple of years ago.

UnderwearInfernoOfLies · 30/11/2019 13:27

It looks like American Sign Language.

TyneTeas · 30/11/2019 13:28

It looks like it might be ASL, that us one handed

helloisitmeyourelookingfor · 30/11/2019 13:28

Think it's American Sign Language as their alphabet is 1 handed

BSL uses both hands

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 30/11/2019 13:28

Aaaah yes it is 2 hands isn't it!

I remember now when DD showed me how to spell a rude word a while ago!

Thank you. Back to the drawing board now for different present ideas!

I think that's the ASL alphabet.

raffle · 30/11/2019 13:29

Finger spelling in BSL uses two hands, not seen it done like this but guess it could be used by a disabled person who only has use of one hand?

TyneTeas · 30/11/2019 13:30

Its not a vintage print, but would this pictorial history of BDA be something she might be interested in?

bda.org.uk/shop/

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 30/11/2019 13:36

Not really I'm afraid TyneTeas

I just thought the print would be something she could have on her wall to refer to when practising her BSL, especially as she's very much a visual learner.

She's doing the BSL as a extra-curricular activity so not in any massive depth at the moment

If she'd be interested in sign languages from other countries it'd be a great gift, but it does indeed look like ASL.

Lololololola · 30/11/2019 13:42

No, definitely not BSL.
Once she has mastered the alphabet, she will be able to do it with her eyes closed, so although it feels tricky at the moment, it gets much easier.
Watching signers on tv is useful for practice - especially Saturday and sunday afternoons on cbeebies as the content is less tricky and they sign for a younger audience!

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 30/11/2019 13:42

I've just found this one on Etsy

It's not vintage but I think she'd like it.

Would that work for those of you who are/were learners?

OP posts:
Lololololola · 30/11/2019 13:59

Yes, would be fine.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 30/11/2019 14:21

Oh damn, I've just noticed that it's from the US so pricey P&P and not much time to get it, frame it and give it to my mum to wrap and give to DD IYSWIM.

ScorchioScorchio · 30/11/2019 22:38

What about this one. BSL fingerspelling and from a seller in the U.K. www.etsy.com/uk/listing/661965510/british-sign-language-print-alphabet

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 01/12/2019 13:42

Thank you, yes I did see that one but it looked a bit too practical, a bit like a school poster IYSWIM.

It needs to be either vintage or arty ideally.

Thanks for all your help so far though folks

I am deaf and this is the one we use at my lip reading class.
