How long for lobes to close up after removing ear piercings?

I got 2 2nd lobe piercings done in August. In November I thought they were getting infected, the doctor told me to remove them. I don’t think they were infected, just irritated. Should I leave them to close up or can I put earrings back in?

Are they OK now?

Mine have never closed up, I haven't worn earrings for years but I can get one through the holes when I try.

Dazedandconfused10 · 27/11/2019 17:18

Mine won't close now. Change the martial of the earring that might be the irritant. Sterling silver all the way for me.

Ohyesiam · 27/11/2019 17:21

None of mine have ever v really closed.
Put an ice cube on your lobe to numb it and push the ear ring through. Sounds awful, but really it’s fine!

I was allergic to nickel and once I removed those earrings and put silver ones in, it was fine.

WillFeral · 27/11/2019 17:31

Thanks all. I don’t know about an allergy - would they have been irritated from the start if I was allergic to nickel/whatever the earring used was made from? Just because they were fine initially.

Mine were fine initially it was more an irritant

TheHootiestOwl · 27/11/2019 17:39

My ears get irritated by cheap earrings, doesn’t stop me wearing them but only for a night out or something. Mine have never closed and my earlobes have a few holes.

Dowser · 27/11/2019 17:42

Mine haven’t closed either
Had them done at 25
Could still get an earring ring..but won’t be trying
That’s 40 years

Haworthia · 27/11/2019 17:44

I’m not clear - how long ago did you remove them?

All you can do is try and get an earring in! Titanium is one of the best metals if your piercings are irritated. Make sure to wash your ears with soap (and rinse well under the shower) daily.

Elbeagle · 27/11/2019 17:45

Took about 25 years for mine to close up! And still only one has, I can still get an earring in the other.

WillFeral · 27/11/2019 17:52

Thanks Dazed.

Haworthia about 2 weeks Blush I didn’t realise some people’s haven’t closed after years!

Mine have never closed up and it's been 20 years

reginafelangee · 27/11/2019 17:56

I haven't worn earrings for about 15 years and my holes haven't closed up. I could pop a pair in now if I wanted.

Haworthia · 27/11/2019 18:04

Whether they close up or not depends how well healed the piercing is to be honest. A well healed piercing will probably stay open indefinitely even if you don’t wear jewellery in it anymore. A newer piercing like yours might have healed over, but equally might not! Like I said, you can but try.

I had a tragus piercing for two years but took it out because it was constantly irritated. It basically closed up overnight.

bluebella4 · 27/11/2019 18:16

Don't think they close over. I got mine done at 8 and I'm now 30.

WillFeral · 27/11/2019 18:46

Thanks Haworthia I’ve just had blood when trying to put one back in so I think they probably aren’t fully healed.

OP posts:
Bluelightdistrict · 27/11/2019 19:58

Don't use sterling silver! Use something like titanium if you want to try again.
Otherwise I think it's different for everyone.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 27/11/2019 21:11

The outsides of mine close up and I have to re-pierce that, but the hole through my lobe is fine, IYSWIM?

I probably only wear earrings once every few months.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 27/11/2019 21:12

(Any my ears were pierced about 30 years ago)

concernedforthefuture · 29/11/2019 21:38

@WillFeral I had problems with allergies. They were fine initially and then went nasty (weeping / red / sore / itchy). I'm sure it was nickel as if I wore silver earrings they were fine.

WillFeral · 29/11/2019 23:07

Thanks concerned and everyone who mentioned allergies, I hadn’t even thought about that.

Bluerussian · 29/11/2019 23:24

Over the years I've gone for long periods without earrings and my holes haven't closed up, I can still put earrings in when i want. However yours were only pierced in August so may close.

ShippingNews · 29/11/2019 23:29

A lot depends on how long you let the holes heal, before taking the earrings out. If it was only a few weeks , I'd guess that the holes have closed. The fact that you got blood when you tried to put an earring in, answers that question. You'd be better off to go and get them re-pierced, rather than poking earrings in and making them bleed. Good luck !
