I damaged someone's wing mirror this morning

Driving through the windy residential road that leads to my work place.. I heard a clunk and didn't realise even I'd hit anything til I got to work and my mirror was folded in. I had to dash home at the end of school (but spotted the damage on my way out) but need to go back tonight and try and find whose car it is, to apologise and find out how to replace it.
I have no idea whose it is.
Would you, knock on random doors (bit nervous of that in the dark) or leave my name and number under the wipers in an envelope asking them to ring me (with apology!)?
Obviously I want to do the right thing!

I’d take pen/paper/envelope/plastic bag in case of needing to write a note, but would try knocking on doors first.

Good on you for the honesty. Smile

That ^ and you could also email the police with the VRM and report it. Then if the person reports it they can pass on your details

MildDrPepperAddiction · 27/11/2019 16:25

Do you not use your mirrors when you're driving?

damnthatanxiety · 27/11/2019 16:27

How did you not notice your ring mirror was damaged whilst driving?

LochJessMonster · 27/11/2019 16:28

@StillMedusa I would knock on a few doors closest to the car and ask if they know who's it is. If nothing, then I would leave a note on the car.

Well done for being honest.

I found them.. knocked one one door and they told me whose it was.
I didn't notice because my mirror didn't even have a scratch on and there wasn't a loud noise just the noise of my mirror moving.
I've only broken the mirror piece so hopefully not too expensive, and the owner was lovely.. and was just surprised I'd bothered to own up!

I was actually pulling to the side quickly on a very congested street as another car was hammering down towards me with no intention of stopping MildDrPepperaddiction... I've been driving over 30 years and manage to use my mirrors quite well usually!
