How do you stop yourself from crying?

Does anyone else get over emotional when they wish they wouldn’t, such as something happening at work or confrontation? Then it’s made worse when someone asks if you’re okay!

It doesn’t happen often and usually because I’m stressed or tired but I seem to manage to keep it all in until someone ‘gives me permission’ by asking if I’m okay! Then I can’t seem to hold it in any longer.

Has anyone overcome this, have any tips please?

I always thought I was pretty tough but this last year my skin isn’t as thick as I thought

I was once given a tip to help: With one hand pinch tightly the bit between the thumb and forefinger on the opposite hand. I have found it does help quite a bit and the bonus is that nobody will notice what you are doing.

If you are a Breaking Bad fan, I find thinking the words "I'm the one who knocks" Grin make me feel less feeble and less out of control in any situation.

Push your tongue against the roof of your mouth it really works!!

I was once told to imagine that you’re making a cup of tea, and it really works. I just go through all the steps in my head and it distracts me enough so that I don’t get emotional.

So frustrating when those tears appear. I would suggest trying to switch your brain into counting or times tables as you are engaging logic and moving from emotion. I have found this works.

My Mum is a big cryer and her way of dealing with it is to wear sunglasses 😎
Which we all then tease her about.

Look up at the sky.

Someone told me this one in work: go to the bathroom and run cold water over both wrists.

I'm not a huge crier, but on those few occasions when I've found tears welling up when they must NOT be allowed to fall, I've faked a coughing fit. I'd rather be thought of as a numpty who sometimes 'swallows the wrong way' than someone who cries over someone being kind to an old person in the shop...
