...seem to be on the Left? Or are they the only ones who talk about it? I can think of a couple of right of centre stand up comedians but that’s just about it.

Some older people in the comedy industry are quite right wing but the market is for wokeness atm. Nearly all the new comics are lefties pretty much except Norcott.

Keepmewarm · 24/11/2019 18:58

Because we are fabulous

Thisnamechanger · 24/11/2019 19:05

Also LOADS of newer stand-ups are still white men that went to Cambridge so they probably feel they have to be as woke as woke can be. I find it a bit fake sometimes tbh.

onalongsabbatical · 24/11/2019 19:12

Because artistic endeavour tends to arise out of struggle and the affinity with change and right-wingedness tends to arise out of complacency and traditionalism.
And because we are fabulous! Grin

LilyJade · 24/11/2019 19:20

Well I'm glad cos I hate for example comedians who are racist, homophobic, disablist & of course sexist; they just get on my wick to be honest!!

derxa · 24/11/2019 19:21

Because artistic endeavour tends to arise out of struggle and the affinity with change and right-wingedness tends to arise out of complacency and traditionalism. Did you type that with a straight face? Grin Emma Thompson? Lily Allen?

Drabarni · 24/11/2019 19:27

Because Artists, entertainers and musicians are pretty poor.
For every one that becomes a household name there are others just treading water, doing their job, getting by.
We do it for the love of it, not for the money.
It's a well known saying "if you can do anything else, do it".
You've not got to want to do anything else, and put up with poor pay, living accordingly.
You'll not find too many jobbing artists voting conservative.

“ Because artistic endeavour tends to arise out of struggle and the affinity with change and right-wingedness tends to arise out of complacency and traditionalism.”

Grin You obviously haven’t been present at what my children call “Mum’s stealth lectures”- when I google performers as we watch them and say “Oh look, 4 of the 5 people on that panel went to Oxbridge and the other one went to Durham- maybe you should do some revision?”.....

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 24/11/2019 19:32

Because artists start off poor!

mindproject · 24/11/2019 19:34

It depends where you're coming from. Nearly everyone looks right wing to me.

Besidesthepoint · 24/11/2019 19:35

Well I'm glad cos I hate for example comedians who are racist, homophobic, disablist & of course sexist; they just get on my wick to be honest!!

Plenty of right wing people are none of those things.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 24/11/2019 19:35

Sorry, i should add, the artists that WROTE most of our most famous artistic works started off poor. And it was a method of drawing attention to the downtrodden and struggling when they hadn't any other voice except through drama and fiction. And then our actors and writers study those authors and gain a sense of moral obligation and empathy with the poor.

Youngatheart00 · 24/11/2019 19:36

Bloody Liberal Elites

MoltoAgitato · 24/11/2019 19:41

The idea that artists are somehow poor went out last century - most people who”make it” now have extensive family support. You need it to survive the years of crap / nonexistent pay.

It’s fashion, simple as that. It’s not the done thing to be a Tory in their circles, despite the fact that the majority went to Oxbridge and have extensive family connections. They also don’t think they’re privileged, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

AllStarBySmashMouth · 24/11/2019 19:42

Because we have sense?

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 24/11/2019 19:43

Many artists might be poor and temping on minimum wage jobs whilst they hope for a break, but that’s not the case for the artists I’m assuming the OP is referring to. They’re sufficiently known to be getting regular work and on their way to, or already we’ll known.

Emma Thompson- supporting Extinction Rebellion and marching, whilst quite happy to fly regularly and not in cattle class.

ohwheniknow · 24/11/2019 19:46

“Mum’s stealth lectures” Grin

MarshaBradyo · 24/11/2019 19:47

Because if you definitely want to make money, with lower risk, there’s easier ways to do it. It’s all part of the mindset that leads to career choices.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 24/11/2019 19:54

If it's a fashion or fad then it's the longest one I've known, this has always been the way. A lot of footballers and managers are left wing too.

The only right wing entertainers that spring to mind are Jim Davidson and Jimmy Saville!

thefluffysideofgrey · 24/11/2019 20:00

Being funny requires a certain amount of intelligence and comedians are often quite educated.

There is a rough correlation between those elements and being left wing.

Individual examples of intelligent, right wing people do not invalidate this.

Fashion. Pure fashion.

WeshMaGueule · 24/11/2019 20:20

Because they're primarily motivated by symbolic / cultural capital not financial capital. Bourdieu innit.

This thread makes me nostalgic for Bernard Manning.

Studies have shown those with left wing and liberal beliefs have a strong tendency towards intelligence, imagination and sense of humour.
