When PPs call other PPs out on opinions

Why do PPs attack each other? In my case, why is my view or advice “shitty” or “BS” but their view is totally correct?

Would MNs say this to each other in a face to face group conversation, or would you just ignore the comment/advice if you disagreed and move on?

It’s really starting to piss me off tbh - it’s becoming degrading and some posters completely lose sight of the OP because they’re so busy bitching about what others are saying. Everywhere I turn, there’s someone who has to be nasty.

Discussion shouldn’t involve attacking PPs - if you disagree (even strongly) with advice or comments given, then just say so. There’s just no need to make people feel like shit.

A bit of argy-bargy focuses the mind!

I think that sometimes it is just because people make such sweeping statements e.g. " I have never met anyone who.... 'insert perfectly common activity'" or they are deliberately snarky and obtuse about a relatively minor typo.

@Bezalelleim I'm a queen of “army barge” but not a fan of PPs being blatantly rude. There’s no need for it.

“I disagree entirely” is preferable to “don’t be a dick, what a stupid comment” as I’ve seen on threads many times. People often give advice based on experience(s) so I don’t understand how (or why) a group of adults can turn into a bunch of childish, mud slinging posters. You kind of think, well stuff this then, I’ll just get pushed out of the thread, which in RL wouldn’t happen. This forum is here to discuss RL and some posters need to stop being so blatantly vile. We’re all people on the receiving end and some comments are uncalled for.

If you feel you are being personally attacked then you should report the post, and MNHQ will review it and delete if they feel that's appropriate.

Rudeness, personal slurs and aggression certainly kill intelligent debate.

I agree, they do that. I have experienced it and have been backed up in the past, but I see it generally, it’s more common now than when I first joined MN some months ago.

What does PP mean in this context? do you mean posters?

If somebody in RL came out wih some of the cobblers posters do on here I would definitely say something face to face.

You have to deal with these things on the thread. Because if you're advising people to stay with an abusive partner, you should expect to be told. Tell someone to buy a pink Christmas tree, it's horrible but doesn't deserve personal attacks.

I think there's two different points you're making. In order for a discussion to flow you have to engage with different opinions, it's not realistic to expect that everyone is going to just comment in a bubble and ignore anything anyone else has said. If I was having a discussion with my friends we would all interact with each other's points.

The rudeness etc is a different point and yes it is unnecessary and uncalled for but I think it is in the majority due to the fact that most of our discussions are with people we know and generally like, or in situations where constraints require we be polite (work for example) so either we don't feel aggravated by conflicting opinions because we like the person giving them, or we just aren't allowed to express our aggravation because , well, HR!

So I think a lot of people reveal their inner rage on this kind of faceless discussion!

@MyKingdomForBrie I’m suggesting really that the personal attacks shouldn’t happen, on here or RL - when you disagree with someone, you just say, you disagree, more often than not you get personal slurs, or told that you’re thick/stupid/lying etc. it’s completely unnecessary. I’ve seen posters being told to shut up and I just think, nah, I’m not even going to attempt to post in this thread, the bullies are out in force with their “correct opinions”.
