Is there an insurance to cover this?

I work for the local authority, and get 6 months full sick pay. I have poorly children atm and am having to take annual leave to look after them.

I just wondered, of your child was very ill and you had to be off work long term, how would most people manage? Is there something I should have in place to cover this?

A local little girl has been in hospital with an incredibly rare illness, since July, a couple of hours away, that's what made me think.

Yes, we have it as part of our life insurance. We get £25k if either child is diagnosed with any of a list of conditions (includes general description such as "condition of the nervous system"). Our broker mentioned it, I hadn't considered it but it makes sense. I just pray we'll never need it.

I'll have to check my policy. Yes, I hope it's never needed too, but what a worry if it was and you didn't have it

It was definitely an additional add on for ours, I don't think it standard unless you have high level cover.
