Too old for Elf... how to say goodbye?

We’ve had our elf for 6 looooong years and I can’t face another year! Our almost ten year old is on the cusp of not believing in Santa and I really don’t want to do it anymore.

How can I explain this? Should I send a letter from the elf saying he’s gone to a new family (or will that cause rejection issues). I feel I probably should do it for another year because he still half believes but URGH.

How does it come to an end?! What should I do?

Have a party for the elf and pass it on to someone else. So glad we didn't have this faff when mine were little.
