Ideas for family 'sharing' meals

Mallowmarshmallow · 08/11/2019 17:57

My kids like a meal that is laid out then shared, ie the same food with more washing up to serve themselves from....!

I'm looking for any ideas.... we've had curry with rice, naans and Indian sides then tonight hot dogs with french bread, sausages, salad and corn on the cob....

Does anyone have any other ideas that would work in a similar fashion?

Slow roast shoulder of lamb, Greek salad, hummus, tzaziki, pitta bread. Pulled pork, slaw and rolls, Taco's, baked spuds and toppings

We sometimes do a big bowl of patatas bravas with various other bits and bobs - prawns or chicken kebabs, wraps, baked cheese with crusty bread, ceviche. Our DC like this kind of thing too.

My DC like ‘build your own’ burgers - burgers, buns, gherkins, cheese slices, tomato slices, lettuce, ketchup.
We also have cheese fondue with a selection of bits to dip: chunks of breads, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower, rolled up Parma ham, apple, fig slices, potato wedges etc...
Build your own jackets - grated cheese, beans, fried pancetta and coleslaw.
Savoury pancakes with different toppings

Fajitas
Burgers
Kebabs
Indoor bbq
Roast (veg in dishes)

Our kids are picky but we’re working them up on this set up as like yours they enjoy the vibe.

I prefer everything not played too, so I can choose as I go.

Sounds like basically anything will keep them amused, as long as it's not plated up in advance? Bring things out in their pans/baking trays/pots and it won't cause additional washing ups apart from maybe extra serving spoons.

Chicken and chorizo pasta bake, garlic bread, salad

Child con carne, rice, nachos, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, shredded lettuce

Tacos (hard or soft tortillas, mince, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, cucumber, guacamole, salsa, grated cheese, sour cream)
Build your own pasta salad
"Italian" buffet - in our house - selection of cold cuts, pasta with pesto/tomato sauce, salad, cheeses, olives, pickles, foccacia or ciabata

Fake nandos - chicken marinated in peri peri sauce, savoury rice/chips/garlic bread/salad/halloumi

Lasagne/garlic bread/salad

I would imagine most meals can be served this way! Pasta dishes with salad and garlic bread. Curries, meat with veg and pots, chilli, tacos!

Lasagne, garlic bread, salad

Also in the summer we like to do a roast chicken, a potato salad, a green salad, fresh baguette and cheese etc.

Jacket potatoes with salad and two or three different toppings.

I think anything can be served in bowls/dishes and everyone can help themselves, even if it’s only two dishes - a casserole in one and rice in another.
