Where to eat in San Francisco? and other recommendations

We will be there for a few days, and I'm keen to find some good places to eat, as well as suggestions for things to do.

Very interested in seafood restaurants and romantic places? Also, my wife will be at a client dinner one evening, so I'll be having dinner alone - wondered about trying some great Chinese food? I don't even know what to order in terms of Chinese (fancy a great pork dish?) so helpful pointers there welcomed too Grin

Have already done Alcatraz, looked at the sea lions, cycled over the Golden Gate bridge and through Sausalito, enjoyed The Castro and The Mission for drinks. I went to the art gallery in the park - is the San Fran MOMA worth going to? I think it was closed when I was there last.

All suggestions and ideas appreciated!

Ferry Building has some good restaurants and a fantastic farmer’s market.

The Stinking Rose (I think it's called) - only if you love garlic though...

popehilarious · 08/11/2019 17:17

Depends if you want to stay in the touristy bit (no shade!) or travel to other neighborhoods.
Mission Chinese is a trendy place with good reviews, House of Nan King used to be fun (dont expect fawning service!)

Yelp used to be good to narrow down what you're looking for.

You have got to have an In-n-Out burger while you’re their, it’s basically law. Animal style. Vvvvv good!

McCormick and Kultetos fish and steak restaurant with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Fog City Diner was cool

I've been to the stinking rose - you do have to love garlic. They told us they season their garlic with food. They were not wrong!

China town is great for atmosphere.

Love San Francisco - wish I could go back soon.

Ooh house of nan king! We went there years ago and loved it!

I had a great evening at Epic Steak on the Waterfront overlooking Bay Bridge.
It seemed to be full of people in-the-know celebrating birthdays/anniversaries etc.

Greens Vegetarian Restaurant at Fort Mason is wonderful. Some of the best food I have eaten anywhere. Lovely view out over the harbour. We loved Fort Mason, the history and because we found a man on the allotments there who was born a few villages up from our home.

Another great memory is Stinking Rose: we season our garlic with food! at North Beach near City Lights bookstore. Our visit involved much red wine and laughter.

We also liked Valencia and Mission and ate in different places there. There's lots of choice and I am sure lots of new restaurants and bars opening up. I agree with Ferry Plaza and the market, wonderful fresh produce and fab food.

We used Trip Advisor's San Francisco app to plan our holiday and there is so much information
Sounds as though you are having a great time.

PS Oh I forgot, there are lots of noodle bars etc in Yerba Beuna Gardens near the tram turnaround.
Started off a bit of an obsession for my wife and me, and I now demand Yasai Pad Thai for tea!

rookiemere · 08/11/2019 17:36

Reviewing I was going to say The Stinking Rose

If you can get a table I would go to Frances, lovely food and wine by the carafe.

Coqueta at Pier 5 is delicious tapas and might be good for a solo dinner - you can sit at the chef's counter.

Verjus in the Financial District is also great (walk-in, no reservations), as is Cotogna.

Joinery in Sausalito is good fun for casual dining with a great view, or the bar at Cavallo Point is another great place just over the bridge. (I don't like their restaurant that much, it's really expensive and not great food but the bar food is good).

Not in the city, but have a look at The Trident in Sausalito.
