Kez200 · 04/11/2019 17:08

I am looking to buy a bottle of good gin (up to £35) for a gin drinking guy. Must be available in supermarkets or Amazon/online as I need to buy it for Friday latest.

Recommendations please!

Gin mare is my fave. DP loves Hendricks (but that’s so readily available I’d go for something a bit different).

Kez200 · 04/11/2019 20:20

I can get botanist for 32, silent pool 34, ophir 18, caorunn 22, forest gin 49.

Ophir looks great but ive seen it in supermarkets and id like to get one that isnt really widely available, if possible.

Jawbox, not any of the flavoured one, the original. Its very smooth.
Bertha's Revenge (an Irish milk gin) has a nice gentle peppery tang to it.
Otherwise, I second gin mare. It is pretty nice, has a distinct flavour but not overwhelming .
I personally cannot abide Hendricks, I find it waaaay too floral.
I agree, avoid any fruity pink or orangey ones. They are not to everyone's palate.

Ophir has a lovely but heavy cardamom flavour. One very of my favourites but it's a 'marmite' gin.

Isle of Harris

£37 fro their website if you can stretch a little. Out of this world delicious!

PurpleDaisies · 04/11/2019 21:17

I don’t like Ophir at all.

Legomadx2 · 04/11/2019 21:22

Isle of Harris comes in a very pretty bottle.

I drink a lot of gin and would love a bottle of that as a treat.

IcaMorgan · 04/11/2019 21:23

I really like Toujours 21. It was made by Raymond Blanc for the Eurostar’s 21st birthday. You can get it from The Whiskey Exchange but it’s £40

acatcalledjohn · 04/11/2019 21:52

I don't like Opihr either. One of my least favourites (only beaten by Gordon's and some of those horrible flavoured ones).

If you can find it, Sabatini is a glorious gin.

KitNCaboodle · 04/11/2019 21:55

Silent Pool
Gin Mare
Cabin Pressure
Bloom
Haymans green label are currently all my faves

Please avoid flavoured gins unless you know for sure he likes them.

I agree with this ^^
As you can tell from my user name I like gin, but really dislike flavoured gin - because it doesn't taste like gin

Sorry to shout, but the current gin craze with various flavoured gins and tonic waters does gin lovers no favours. If I want a gin and tonic I want to taste the juniper and I don't want to drown the flavour with flavoured tonic water. I might as well have some cheap vodka with some random flavouring added to it.

I am not a gin snob BTW, a bottle of Gordons is a fine gin, but flaboured gins are for peopl who don't like the taste of proper gin

Rant over Grin Gin

EstebanTheMagnificent · 04/11/2019 22:51

Portobello Road and Bathtub are both quite juniper-forward so he might not be keen on Bloom. I agree with pp that Dyfi (duh-vee) is lovely, as is Aber Falls, another Welsh gin. Roku is a very nice Japanese gin.

LordEmsworth · 04/11/2019 22:52

Tappers - can buy from Majestic plus some are in Ocado, not all of them though. All of them are fantastic.

Ginfordinner · 04/11/2019 22:55

I will make a note of those Esteban.
Any other predominantly juniper flavoured gins?

Yesivenamechanged11 · 04/11/2019 22:55

Can't beat a lovely crisp Tanqueray 10, got a bottle lined up for after DS' birth next month 😁

woodymiller · 04/11/2019 23:09

Edinburgh Gin Cannonball. Their Christmas gin is fab too but prob a bit early. Also like Kinrara but slightly over your budget

HowDoIGetOffTheBus · 04/11/2019 23:26

The Gin Bothy Gunshot Gin. Smoky, lovely with ginger ale.

toomuchisneverenough · 04/11/2019 23:42

What about Short Cross Gin?

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 05/11/2019 00:58

Isle of Harris as pp said is lovely wanted to try it for ages and found it all over the bar at the theatre when I went to see Hamilton so gave it a try and wasn't disappointed. Only thing is it's not in the supermarket as far as I know. The Chase elegant gin is also nice.

And although a vodka I can also get behind pp suggestion of Black Cow, such a smooth creamy vodka you can pretty much have it neat over ice which normally I'd never do with vodka.

Kez200 · 05/11/2019 04:18

Ive gone for the Botanist and treated myself to a Silent Pool!

I was going to say Monkey 47. It's a German gin, I think, but lovely and dry (and strong). Your choice is also good.

I agree with PP about flavoured gins. I've been drinking gin for far longer than I care to remember. I like mine in a straight glass - none of your goldfish bowls here.

wonkylegs · 05/11/2019 09:35

@Ginfordinner
I don't agree - although flavoured gins may open up the market to a wider range of people both have their place and you can love both purist Gins and flavoured ones just don't expect them to be the same
I'm a huge fan of Jack Cains Northumberland Gin with straight tonic but also think the strawberry & black pepper gin I made in the summer is to die for.
