I was told this as a child and I am in my 50s now but I am shocked that it is still true today. I had assumed that all trains would have holding tanks now. That said, old habits die hard and I never use the toilet when the train is in or approaching a station. Aside from the hygiene element I always worry about someone sitting in my seat if I am in the loo when a log of people get on the train!

Cross country trains have onboard tanks, that’s why some of their coaches stink!

Yep, it's all the engineers who have to repair the tracks I feel sorry for.

I didn't know this, isn't it revolting, that's why I never go unless I absolutely have to and use the station loo instead. Yuk.
