If you've applied for a postal vote, did you get an acknowledgement?

Question says it all really. My DS is a student, but wants to vote in our home constituency, so immediately before going off to university he applied for a postal vote. He mentioned the other day that he had never heard anything from the council. I just wondered whether that's a sign that his application has not been actioned, or whether it's normal not to hear anything until an election has been called and you receive the voting papers.

I would advise him to ring and check. I've just moved and didn't get an acknowledgement from the local council when I put my name down on the electoral roll via gov.uk. Even though gov.uk say they're supposed to. The guy at the council acted bemused when I told him! How hard would it be to send an email? Would save them taking calls. Same thing with your DS's situation.
