Dental infection - how long for antibiotics to help?

Currently on waiting list to have some damaged teeth removed under sedation due to awful dentist phobia. Took me months of awful intermittent pain to register with a dentist.

Have had some pain over the last few days but nothing unusual. This afternoon the pain became insane. Called my amazing dentist who said to come straight in. She confirmed I have an infection and prescribed antibiotics and I have to go back in two days to make sure they’re working. Can’t do any more for me painwise (already on very strong painkillers for another condition). I’ve tried literally everything - morphine, naproxen, paracetamol, orajel, difflam spray, hot salt water, hydrogen peroxide mouthwash, cold, heat etc etc. I know nothing’s going to help apart from the antibiotics.

Haven’t had an abscess for about 20 years. How long does it take for the pain to improve even slightly? I may have cut my own head off by then.

(And I know some of you will think I’m crazy for not letting the dentist remove the tooth without waiting for sedation but I just can’t - the fact I’m having pain like this and still not begging them to take it out should tell you how terrified I am!)
