Anyone in the traffic police?

Letter through the door from the traffic police

Intention to prosecute for the offence of “stop / cause to remain at rest a vehicle on a carriageway of motorway”

I’ve googled it and still none the wiser as to what I have done. 🤔

Did you stop on the hard shoulder for any other reason than an emergency at all e.g., to make a phone call?

TheQueef · 26/10/2019 12:07

You've stopped where you shouldn't.

OrangeTwirlGate · 26/10/2019 12:09

Definetly never on a hard shoulder. I’m scared shitless of stopping there from all the horror stories I’ve heard.

It’s came today but with an incident date of mid September so I can’t be clear of what else I could have done.

Travelling in a 40mph work zone?

TheQueef · 26/10/2019 12:12

Ask for the photo evidence, it should be clear enough for you to work out of it's you.

Lucylou321 · 26/10/2019 12:12

You've stopped somewhere you shouldn't. Either motorway or carriageway. Could even be something like a bus lane or restricted zone?

Rainbowshine · 26/10/2019 12:16

When you refer to the traffic police, they are part of a regional service/force usually, e.g. Thames Valley, Warwickshire etc. Are you sure it’s legitimate and not a scam?

OrangeTwirlGate · 26/10/2019 12:16

Didn’t know you could ask for photo evidence.
I will have to wait til Monday when their lines open. Very annoying.

Thanks for your replies

No other info like a photograph ? Location at least ? You have the date (or is that when the incident was reported) but no time ?

OrangeTwirlGate · 26/10/2019 12:17

It looks very legit. Greater Manchester police.
Although I will double check so thanks for the warning.

When you say 'through the door' do you mean delivered through the postal system with a franked mark with the relevant police area ?

Rainbowshine · 26/10/2019 12:21

Car plates might have been cloned, were you in the area at the time? If not can you prove it (eg location history on mobile phone)?

JellyfishAndShells · 26/10/2019 12:21

Sorry, cross post. Is that location possible for you ? if not, there is a possibility of number plate cloning - your reg, on a similar car.

TheQueef · 26/10/2019 12:27

I've been caught by anpr waiting at j 34 M1 but the photo showed I was in a queue so the fine cancelled.

OrangeTwirlGate · 26/10/2019 12:32

Envelope did look legit but I guess even then you never know.

I will definitely last for a photo though. Surely they get these things wrong and hopefully it’s easy enough to contest.

My dh had a similar one and you could log on and see the photo

Graphista · 26/10/2019 12:50

I'd start by verifying the number you're supposed to call on the letter BEFORE calling it, 101 can help with this.

Could be a scam letter.

If it is a legit letter and you're sure you haven't committed the offence stated then of course ask for any evidence they claim to have as cloned plates can also be an issue.

But if it's completely genuine you'll just have to face the consequences

katielilly · 26/10/2019 13:07

I had one like this OP but a photo was with it.
The (clear) photo was of a different make of car with a different number plate, in a city I've never been to in my life Angry
So mistakes can happen.

LannisterLion1 · 26/10/2019 23:26

Ask for a photo. My friend's plates were cloned and the car using them had an accident. Sorted easily using photographic evidence and the dvla i think.

ivykaty44 · 26/10/2019 23:30

I had similar from Somerset police (hadn’t been in Somerset) when I phoned it was a different Male, registration just the car colour was the same...so maybe is someone else

clutchingon · 26/10/2019 23:33

My husband had his car cloned. We had a load of penalty notices through and sorting it out was a complete pain in the arse.
