Holding a 1990s dinner party - please give me some food suggestions!

I'm holding a 1990s themed dinner party to celebrate my niece's 30th birthday as she grew up in the 90s.

Can anyone give me some suggestions of meals which used to be really popular at the time, or things you remember really enjoying if you were a child or teenager then?

I know pizza was popular, but that's so commonplace for people to eat anyway that I would like to go for something a bit more nostalgic!

Ideas for starters, mains, desert and nibbles would be much appreciated! Party decorations too if anyone can think of anything!

There aren't any vegetarians/vegans/dietary requirements to cater for, so all ideas welcome. Thank you ever so much!

I can't think of any food particularly associated with the 90's, just things that weren't really around then (flavoured hummus, pesto, avocados in excessive quantities...)

If you're going for the nostalgia thing, how about a little kid style 'party tea' - cocktail sausages, mini pizzas, teeny triangle sandwiches, fairy cakes, jelly, 'traffic lights' (cocktail sticks with a cheery tomato, slice of carrot and piece of green pepper), party rings, cheese and pineapple hedgehog etc.

HollowTalk · 25/10/2019 20:47

1990s dinner parties were all Delia Smith food, as far as I can remember.

exexpat · 25/10/2019 20:47

If you are thinking of slightly more upmarket or adult ideas, I seem to remember that the 90s was marked by slices of kiwi fruit on everything in restaurants (a marker of 'nouvelle cuisine'), and sun-dried tomatoes were very big. Oh, and goats cheese started being the one thing everyone gave vegetarians.

Oh wow, thank you for all your replies everyone!
I'm feeling truly nostalgic now and wondering whether my love of lasagne and moussaka comes from the 90s!

Anything with sundried tomatoes or pesto! Delia had lots of books out in the 90s - you could try some of those for inspiration.

MarigoldGlove · 25/10/2019 20:51

There is a ‘back in time for dinner’ from the 90s.

Definitely Vienetta and/or Sara Lee chocolate Gateau.

Bernard Matthews mini Kievs?

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/10/2019 20:51

Delia Smiths winter collection is a great 90's recipe book, as is the summer one but not for now Obvs, and the food is all delicious.

catnidge · 25/10/2019 20:51

I think sundried tomatoes on/in everything. I think avocado's were a 90s thing (and back again now) and kiwi fruit.
