Travelling alone with DD - need permission?

This half term for various reasons I am taking DD(8) on a short break to Ibiza while DH and DD (4) stay at home. On the back of another thread I am suddenly wondering if I will need to show permission in some way?

It's not a problem but what exactly do I need? A letter from DH saying what? FWIW DD and I have the same surname...

I’ve never been asked to show permission.

The letter of the law is that to take a child abroad you permission from everyone with parental responsibility. Whether or not you get asked to prove it is another matter

It depends on the country you are going to. Canada I know is hot on it. It’s the only place I’ve known for a letter or some kind of permission has been sought from the other parent.

I was advised at the border that I should better have one with me in future. I was travelling with the DD and my MIL. not the best choice for a potential kidnapper

I have travelled extensively with both my sons w/o their father and have never been asked. For a while we had different last names in our passports. Never an issue.

I took DS (then 1) to Majorca last summer with my sister. DH gave me a photocopy of his passport picture page and wrote on the back he agreed I could take him on holiday. We have the same surname, my sister doesn’t and nobody asked but I know from here other mums have been questioned.

So basically it's unlikely we will be asked when going from the UK to Spain and back again but technically we should have one? What should it say though?

I regularly flew to Europe with my DCs when they were younger. I never got asked anything about their Dad. He usually flew out to join us a few says later.

Our DD also travelled to Europe with my brother with no questions asked but that was eurotunnel not flying.

My DParents used to take my DDs on holiday regularly when they were small. They have a different surname and no one ever asked them about it when they were travelling.

If your surnames the same as dd then you should be fine

I must have been unlucky!
I have a different surname from ds and was queried a few times times when he was young.
Twice leaving Dover, once leaving Stansted and twice returning through Gatwick.
They asked about my relationship to ds and did suggest that I carried a letter from dp or proof of my relationship to Ds. I was never prevented from travelling though.
I must just look suspicious 😀

I've taken DS abroad multiple times (single parent) and never been asked. We have the same surname though, I've heard of people having issues when they have different surnames than their children.
