So...I have a new iPhone and have a few questions...

It's an iPhone 7.

1 It currently has iOS 12.4 but I have the update 13.1.3 available to update to.

A any ideas how long an update would take?

B any bugs with the newer iOS I should be aware of?

With last phone I'm afraid I rather neglected the iOS updates BECAUSE of reports in the news and comments from users online that there were big problems with certain iOS versions but this resulted in me not updating for ages and caused other problems, want to avoid that this time.

2 Because of the problems I was having with last phone I fairly recently did a backup to iCloud after not doing for ages.

A concern I have with this phone is it's half the memory of the old phone (se 64gb this one only has 32gb and according to info on settings I ALREADY have used 16gb mainly on apps pre loaded which I'll never bloody use Angry) so I'm wary of downloading the iCloud backup to this phone and actually I'm not really sure I want to. The photos I didn't want to lose I emailed to myself (in case the iCloud backup hadn't worked) and the apps I use regularly I'm just downloading semi-fresh to this phone. There were likely a load of apps and "stuff" backed up to iCloud that I didn't really use, won't miss and don't want clogging up my memory.

So I would appreciate thoughts/comments on this.

3 now to fun side - any apps/games you would recommend? Tips for using iPhone 7?

Looking forward to reading replies.

I’m on the latest updates and it seems ok.

Sorry but the only apps I use are bus stop ones!

Now - I want to know why Macs (laptop/desktops) are still called Macs but iPhones aren’t Mac - when Apple MacIntosh was the original name. When did they drop that bit?

Graphista · 18/10/2019 17:33

Yes the Mac thing is a bit weird isn't it? Thanks for quick reply.

You only use for bus apps?? I use my phone for EVERYTHING Grin

That update is actually a secondary bug fix update - it took about 45 mins to do my phone. I didn’t notice the issues that were noted in the bug fixes tbh.

carolina21 · 18/10/2019 18:01

I did update at night so not sure how long it took

ExpletiveDelighted · 18/10/2019 18:03

The update has taken about 45 mins on al our phones. It did log us out of a few apps but other than that fine.

Graphista · 18/10/2019 18:41

45 mins isn't too bad

Which apps did it log you out of if you don't mind my asking?

NotOnMyWatchSunshine · 18/10/2019 18:44

My update took about 6 minutes today, my emails are annoying me, and the screen has actually currently got a weird overlap thing, but it doesn't bother me really.

Graphista · 18/10/2019 19:59

One if my email accounts new messages from .gov addresses appear then disappear wtf is that about?!

Anyone used the numbers spreadsheet app is it worth a go?

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 18/10/2019 21:07

Yes I use the spreadsheets. They’re quite good.

I’ve got a 7+, I did the update. So far so good.

Can’t believe that’s all the storage you’ve got though. Definitely have as much iCloud back up as you can.

userxx · 18/10/2019 21:12

I've done another update just now, my phone is a tiny 16gb and the system is taking up 5gb 😡. You can delete apps you won't use or offload them to free up space.

gingajewel · 18/10/2019 22:18

I buy extra storage for 79p a month, which I think is really reasonable.

userxx · 18/10/2019 22:36

But the extra storage is only for iCloud isn't it, It doesn't give you extra storage on your actual phone.

Graphista · 18/10/2019 22:36

Can u delete preloaded apps? They're the ones annoy me the most I've a folder of 14 of these that I'll never use Angry

I like a spreadsheet and budget that way and would be much easier to have on phone to update regularly

Yes I have plenty iCloud storage it's just annoying that so much memory is used up by things I neither want nor use!

The computer is called a Macintosh. It’s an Apple Macintosh, the phone is an Apple iPhone.
Rather like a Nissan Duke and a Nissan Micra.

RainbowMum11 · 18/10/2019 22:43

Delete the apps you don't use to save your memory.
Not had any problems with any updates.
Always back up to the cloud just in case!

CodenameVillanelle · 18/10/2019 22:45

Yes you can delete most of the pre loaded apps

userxx · 18/10/2019 22:46

Yep, go to settings, general, iPhone storage, hit whichever app you don't want, an option will come up to delete or offload.

Nat6999 · 18/10/2019 22:47

Put it on to do the updates before you go to bed, they will be done by morning.

jodgepodge · 19/10/2019 10:28

I have an iPhone 7 plus with 32 GB. Seems the same as before on iOS 13 which I updated to the day it came out. Still got over 21 GB of storage available and I've put games on it etc too. I think I watched it update and it took about 30 minutes.

Lhastingsmua · 19/10/2019 10:51
  1. Update the os first. iOS 13 is an upgrade. If your phone is brand new, it shouldn’t take that long to update once it’s downloaded (less than 45 minutes, more like 10-15?). It’s very stable so no bugs.

Also ignore the press. I think you got sucked into some scaremongering - I have updated my iPhones immediately since 2012 and had no issues with certain versions etc. There were no big issues.

  1. I recommend restoring your iCloud backup for your contacts, photos etc - there will be useful data in the backup that you have forgotten about. From there, you can decide whether you would be more comfortable with a fresh account like you have now, or if you’d be happier with just deleting whatever is unwanted from your iCloud account.

Yes, you can delete preloaded apps. If you don’t have the option to, you should after you update.

You can even get budgeting apps rather than making spreadsheets yourself

Lhastingsmua · 19/10/2019 10:53

Also 16gb already used sounds normal - that’s not data significantly wasted on preloaded apps, the majority of that is used for the actual functionality of the phone eg the operating system. iOS 13 should actually free up some of this data as it’s more efficient.

Graphista · 19/10/2019 14:25

Thanks for all the help and advice guys, I've offloaded some apps today and storage down to 14gb which isn't a massive saving but still helps and makes me happy.

Is "keynote" an apple version of PowerPoint?

Anyone use iTunes U? I love the idea of learning more but don't know how useful this is plus had it on old phone, meant to investigate but never actually got around to it.

Bit of a weird one the icon for "numbers" has disappeared from home pages but when I search on App Store i still have it how do I put the icon back on?

OP posts:
Graphista · 19/10/2019 14:26

My mistake I put numbers in a folder d'oh!!

Podcasts - keep meaning to "get into" this, are they streamed or do they take up data storage? Are they free?
