I can't get hold of the people in question so I am hoping someone in MN will be able to help.

How do you list in alphabetical order surnames that use von/van and have different capitalization? such as:

Katja von der Hagen
Phillip Van der Berg

Confused

I work in a global organisation. Our global address list in Outlook lists them in the Vs.

Thanks for updating.

I work in a global organisation. Our global address list in Outlook lists them in the Vs.

But in some cases that would be wrong.

I have a van name. It should be listed under the actual name initial, not under v, which is a prefix. It irritates me that the dc’s school has them under v.

I'm a van too and I hated it when I was listed under 'v', in the Netherlands it would be the other name otherwise there would be far too many people listed under 'v'.
I've got a boring English surname now so no more problems Wink

I should have checked good old Wikipedia!

In the Netherlands and Suriname, names starting with "van" are filed under the initial letter of the following name proper, so Johannes van der Waals is filed under "W".

In Belgium, any surnames beginning with "Van" or "van" are filed under "V". So for example Eric Van Rompuy is listed under the "V" section, not under the "R".

In South Africa the Afrikaans surname Van der Merwe would be listed under the "v" section as is done in Belgium (see below) and not under "m",
