What sort of heathen starts of a lasagne with a layer of pasta?

Watching Dinner Date (I know, I know Blush) and one guy is making lasagne. Am I the heathen as I always start off with a layer of the tomato based sauce?

OP posts:

From the top:
Cheese

I skim off the oily/saucy part of the bolasgnaise and cover the base of the dish with it then a layer of pasta, then bolagnaise and pasta layers maybe 2 or 3 then spinach covered in cheese sauce and then mozzarella on top.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/10/2019 20:35

It say to do so on my packet of lasagne sheets. But it just seems wrong so I don’t.

From the bottom

Pasta has to have sauce each side so it cooks properly!

Bologna's
Pasta
White sauce
Bolognese
Pasta
White sauce
Cheese on top
Herbs

🤷‍♀️

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/10/2019 20:37

Do I use too much cheese?

No that’s silly. You can never have too much cheese.

EmmiJay · 15/10/2019 20:38

It still stresses me out that I'm supposedly weird for 'precooking' my pasta sheets before putting them in. Confused but yes some sauce needs to be on the bottom.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/10/2019 20:39

Ummmmm precook? I haven’t don’t that since the 80s when I think it was the done thing.

Mamasaurus82 · 15/10/2019 20:41

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD- how are you getting so many layers in there? I can only fit 2 layers of pasta in mine.
Yeah OP, it would be wrong to put padta sheet straight at the bottom of dish... surely it would stick ...Confused

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/10/2019 20:42

I have a very deep lasagne dish. I love lasagne.

EmmiJay · 15/10/2019 20:44

Well I don't know about the 80s thing because I was only born in '85 Grin but yh it just made more sense to me to do this. Tastes great!

ConstanzaAndSalieri · 15/10/2019 20:44

From the bottom

Thin layer of Bolognese
Pasta
White sauce
Bolognese

Cheese

On a good day can get five layers of pasta in but I spread the Bolognese - which has at least as much veggies as mince in it - very thin

Nat6999 · 15/10/2019 20:45

I only put the cheese sauce on top with loads of parmesan.

managedmis · 15/10/2019 20:45

Did it stick?

TheCanterburyWhales · 15/10/2019 20:46

Italians start off with a layer of lasagne. At least all those surrounding me do, but there will be no hard and fast rules.
I usually get about 6-8 layers. I think that's the biggest difference between most pasta dishes eaten in Italy and eaten in the UK. Ours are more pasta/less sauce whereas in the UK it seems to be the opposite

DramaAlpaca · 15/10/2019 20:46

No to pasta on the bottom, and another no to pre-cooking the lasagne sheets. And a big, fat no to cheese sauce. Quel horreur!

I do, from bottom to top: ragu, pasta, bechamel. Then repeat the layers twice. Finish with a generous sprinkle of parmesan on top.

LonginesPrime · 15/10/2019 20:48

It's easier to serve if there's a layer of pasta at the bottom as you can pick up the whole slice without having to go back to the dish and scoop up the remaining sauce.

TheCanterburyWhales · 15/10/2019 20:48

We mix the meat sauce with the bechamel as well, apart from the top layer. Again though, it's down to preferences, my Sil makes hers without bechamel at all. And the most popular TV ad for lasagne (Barilla) has them putting a meat sauce layer on top.

Apolloanddaphne · 15/10/2019 20:49

I always start mine with a layer of pasta. And i only put the cheese sauce on the top. My lasagne is excellent (so I have been told).

cheesenpickle · 15/10/2019 20:51

Bolognese always on the bottom.I.Don't like my lasagne too sloppy

So I do
Bolognese
Pasta
Bolognese
Layer of mozzarella
Pasta
Bolognese
Proper bechamel sauce with parmesan, Dijon mustard and a grated cheddar on top
Its lovely.

cookiemonster5 · 15/10/2019 20:51

Made lasagne tonight and I always put the sheets in the bottom. Makes for a really nice slice and easier to get out the dish if you have a solid sheet of pasta to get the fish slice under.

Teacakeandalatte · 15/10/2019 20:52

Dinner date

notangelinajolie · 15/10/2019 20:54

Well Gino's lasagne (which is fabulous btw) starts with a layer of bechamel on the bottom.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 15/10/2019 20:55

I do bolognese, pasta, cheese, pasta, white sauce, cheese, pasta, bolognese, cheese, pasta, white sauce then cheese on top

Cheese on every layer is so much better :)

ShowOfHands · 15/10/2019 20:58

I used to think this until I tried it on the recommendation of an Italian chef. It cooked through, didn't stick and made for better structural integrity.
