How can I check my mental health?

I’ve been severely down and depressed for a few years. As time goes on, I’ve started to question my mental health...I want to know how can I go about having a mental health assessment?

Not trying to drip feed but mental health problems do run on my fathers side of the family and he has had distant family members who have been sectioned, two who have committed suicide and one at the moment who is undergoing treatment to do with her mental health. I haven’t thought much about it until now but the older I get the more depressed I get and slowly but surely I’m really finding it hard to keep going on with life how it is and I can’t see a way out of this black hole I seem to be living in.

TIA and please genuine responses

The gateway to all mental health services is via your GP.

Make an appointment, and describe how you've been feeling. In my experience, in most cases people leave the appointment with a starter dose of anti-depressants, and often an optional referral for counselling etc.
