Want to leave Virgin Media...decent WiFi alternatives please?

Our Virgin Media deal is up... I want to leave as it annoys me how much they put their prices up.

Currently pay £46 a month (due to go up to £61 next month). This is for tv and landline.

We don't need a landline and I'm up for binning the tv package.

Who else does good WiFi? We have 100mgp with Virgin which is really good.

We also moved because of the constant price rises and dumped the TV element of the package - we have fibre broadband and moved to Plusnet. Early days but it's been fine so far and I haven't missed the TV package yet. We do have Freesat and Freeview though. We do get the landline through Plusnet as well.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 12/10/2019 17:04

try plusnet

Pavlova31 · 12/10/2019 17:06

Just started with BT on an Unlimited Broadband package.Excellent service and not one router reset in the week we have had it.
Will upload technical specs and price when I read them when home.
Just finished with EE . Literally had to reset the router every few minutes due to Connection failing ... appalling service.
Just finished

PurpleCrazyHorse · 12/10/2019 17:28

We're with TalkTalk. The router is okay, but DH sometimes struggles as it doesn't prioritise internet traffic, so his work conference calls don't get priority which is a problem if the kids are streaming TV after school or on devices. We could buy our own router though, the TalkTalk website has instructions for using your own hardware. But we might go back to Virgin as we've got door-to-door fibre in our area now.

However the TalkTalk fibre package is really good value (our Virgin was going up to over £50) and we now pay £27/month I think, including landline. Customer Services have been super helpful too. Really can't fault it.

We pay for Now TV and Netflix, and have FreeView. Don't miss the TV package at all.

Freddiefox · 12/10/2019 17:28

Virgin put my bill up to £70 a month on end o was out of contract! Basic tv package nothing fancy

BarbaraofSeville · 12/10/2019 17:29

Have you tried haggling with Virgin? Tell them you will leave if they don't offer you a deal?

We've just moved from BT to Virgin - we don't have 'proper' pay TV only Netflix. BT wern't great and we were paying £32 for some sort of fast broadband that dropped out a lot - didn't know about resetting the router, will try that in future if we have any problems.

We are currently paying Virgin the equivalent of £19 per month due to some cashback deal. If they're any good I'll haggle to stay, but I was annoyed that BT put it up to FIFTY ONE POUNDS A MONTH for broadband and landline only. Once I'd started the switch they offered a deal of £19 per month, but I said no, as the connection wasn't very good.

We're with EE. No complaints. Easy to deal with, decent service

AllTheProsecco · 12/10/2019 18:16

Not Vodafone. We've had shocking customer service and bloody awful WiFi. Basically can't get WiFi in 1/3 of our 3 bed semi and cuts out multiple times a day.

Fleetheart · 12/10/2019 18:19

I’m with John Lewis broadband. Excellent customer service, they use plusnet. Am quite happy, left virgin as their customer service was abysmal.

anitagreen · 12/10/2019 18:19

I have just a landline and broadband I pay £11 a month with Sky. Don't use the phone as no need

MrsJoshNavidi · 12/10/2019 18:22

We moved from Virgin to Now TV.

SarahBeeney · 12/10/2019 21:15

Thanks all. We pay for Prime/Netflix and Now so don't need the tv package either. I'll have to get used to not having series link,or buy a free view recording box thingy.
I'll have a look at the companies suggested.
Many thanks!

I am with Virgin Media and agree about the price rises, it is annoying.

Plusnet seem to be a good alternative.

Do not touch TalkTalk with a bargepole, they routinely come bottom of customer service surveys.

Timeywimey10 · 12/10/2019 21:20

We don't seem to be able to use serieslink for BBC programmes anymore, either. The programme appears in the list but it defaults to iplayer.

ssd · 12/10/2019 21:20

My package has went up a hellush amount, thus month it was over 90 quid 😳😳
We don't have sky sports or miv3, Dh has bt sport, not sure the cost. We have the highest broadband speed available as both dcs game and are online all the time.

Cost is too much though whenever I phone them they always tell me I need the broadband speed as we use it.

ShellieEllie · 12/10/2019 21:22

You certainly won't get the broadband connection speeds with anyone else. Just call them and ask for disconnections team - I'm sure they'll come up with a better deal for you.

AlwaysOverworkedUnderpaid · 12/10/2019 21:25

Call them to cancel, they will offer you a better deal, but decline it and proceed with the cancellation.

Within five days you’ll have a phone call from another department who will agree to anything you want to keep you!

Useful thread. I'm with Virgin Media and have had no wifi since Wednesday. It also went down for a couple of days last week
I'm paying £68 a month for the pleasure. They keep delaying the fix date. Supposed to be Monday but I'm not that hopeful. No point paying £68 for nothing!

AlpineSnow · 21/11/2020 18:03

Old thread but useful to me

josbd · 22/11/2020 16:32

Plusnet is very good, as is Sky.

AlpineSnow · 22/11/2020 16:34

Thanks. Will have to change if they don't fix my wifi soon.
