4 yr old constantly on the toilet?

DD needs the toilet all the time. She just turned 4 last week but seems to need the toilet at least 3 times after every drink. Not huge drink either but she does have to be stopped from drinking them so quickly. We have no chance of potty training at night as we still have the very occasional accident if she can’t get to the toilet quick enough or is left to have a rare nap.
Is this normal for her age? DS was potty trained at night by his 3rd birthday.

Diabetes?
UTI?
I think a visit to the GP with a urine sample is required. If you have nothing to put a urine sample in just ask at any pharmacy for a sample tube.

It isn’t a recent thing so I doubt it’s a UTI. Diabetes did cross my mind a while back.

We had this this year with our then 4 yo. I thought it was just habitual but then she started to complain of pain when she did a wee. I was convinced she had an infection but the gp took a sample and said she didn't. She thought the pain could be where dd was wiping herself too vigorously. She does still do a lot of wees compared to her siblings but the pain element seems to have gone. I think it was just some sort of phase.

What made you think diabetes before, was it just the toilet thing or had you noticed anything else?
Weight loss?
Increase in thirst?
Do you have anyone with type 1 in your family?

Wizzbangpop · 12/10/2019 15:07

Does her breath smell sweet?
Does she drink more than an average 4yo?
Does she go more at certain times of the day?

hidinginthenightgarden · 12/10/2019 15:30

I think she drinks a lot for a 4 yr old but she is adopted so not sure about family history.

This was the first sign of DS having Type 1. He was guzzling pint after pint of water. He was getting up at least 3times in the night for a wee and I now know where every public loo is in town.

NanooCov · 12/10/2019 15:36

Not being dry at night at 4 is not at all unusual. It's a hormone thing rather than something you can "train".

I'd ask the doctor to test for type 1 diabetes if she's on the loo a lot during the day and drinking a lot too.

My daughter did this at about 3 1/2 always going to the toilet, kept going. She stopped for a while they started it again about 6 months later. Now stopped it again. Hadn't got a uti or anything wrong it was like some type of phase she went through. When I researched it online lots of others went through it too xx

Thanks ladies. I always notice it more when we are away (like now) because I am having to take her every time and it feels constant!
