Does anyone know anything about student finance? Only received half my tuition fees

I have just had an invoice from my university. It says I am liable for half of my tuition fees. I've just checked my award letter and its there as clear as day that they are paying 4665 towards them. I simply didn't notice. Of course its now the weekend and I can't speak to anyone.
I'm in the third year of my degree and I'm shitting myself. There is no way I can pay this.
Does anyone have any words of reassurance? I feel sick. I'm a lifelong UK resident and no changes have occurred in the last few years.

Login to your student finance account and see what it says. It's probably something easily sorted. The award notification and any other letters will be on there.

Have you had any time out during the course? My DS took an interruption of studies for a year but from Easter rather than the end of the academic year and this happened to him

Northernsoullover · 12/10/2019 11:21

I've just noticed on my form that it says tuition fee loan requested 0. So it would appear that I've made the error. I hope to god that I can apply retrospectively.

It may be a mistake.

Have you had any previous funding before your current degree?

Does your course involve a work placement/internship/sandwich year?

Northernsoullover · 12/10/2019 11:44

I've clearly not applied for my tuition fee loan. How I do not know so I hope I can do it retrospectively or I'm stuffed.

Hopeful bump

I don't really understand why they have sent half the money if you requested zero?
Are you able to ring Student Loans Company today and sort it out?

bigbluebus · 12/10/2019 14:35

Just googled and looks like they're open until 4pm today

Northernsoullover · 12/10/2019 14:42

I got a grant for half of mine so I only need a loan for half. I did phone but its student finance Wales I call.

Your university or student union will almost certainly have an advice centre which will be very used to dealing with student finance problems. Please go and see them, they are the experts and if anyone can help you to sort this out, they will be able to.

sofiathe2nd · 12/10/2019 15:14

I work in a uni and it could just be an admin error unfortunately (we had something happen along similar lines to 4 of our postgrad students this year), I’d speak to them on Monday and take your offer letter with you. I’d also ask if they can make sure they stop anyone chasing you for payment until it’s investigated. Don’t panic as yet: universities are huge admin monsters and occasionally things like this do happen

Northernsoullover · 12/10/2019 15:20

@sofiathesecond its an error alright. Mine. My worry is if I didn't apply for tuition fees (I'm assuming its my cock up at this stage) if I can apply for them now?

OP posts:
AlexaShutUp · 12/10/2019 15:21

Please, OP, see an adviser. You won't be the first student who has failed to apply for student finance. They will know what, if anything, can be done to sort it out.

Northernsoullover · 12/10/2019 15:28

I will be there first thing Monday morning. I'm just hoping someone else might have done similar and its all been ok.

AlexaShutUp · 12/10/2019 15:30

Just be aware that they'll be really busy at this time of year, so you might have to wait a few days for an appointment, but it's definitely worth talking to them, they will know what to do.

MummytoCSJH · 12/10/2019 15:33

You can change the amount you apply for retrospectively provided you are actually entitled to it. Don't worry, uni will have seen this before. Contact student finance ASAP and request they change it to the full amount. Try not to stress!

Northernsoullover · 12/10/2019 15:51

Thank you mummy !!! I will be at student services first thing Monday

From my recollection you can apply up to the end of March 2020 for this academic year.

Northernsoullover · 12/10/2019 16:13

Thank you alone. I must admit I was hysterical this morning. I do love to catastrophise Blush

AloneLonelyLoner · 12/10/2019 17:15

I've been there @Northernsoullover . I've also had ones where my council sent my grant cheque (the only thing keeping me afloat) to an old address and the new resident stealing the money.

Money worries suck, but if it isn't March, it's May (it's an M month next year) so breathe deeply and get onto your funding people on Monday.

Of course I'm Wales it could be different, I don't know, but I doubt its significantly different.

Ellmau · 12/10/2019 18:25

Good luck getting it sorted!

Northernsoullover · 12/10/2019 19:31

Thanks everyone. I will update Monday. I know you will all be on the edge of your seats until then Grin
