Did anyone else see a cyclist on the M6 this afternoon?

I'm still really shaken up Sad.

A cyclist on the motorway is vulnerable enough, but this was narrow lanes with physical concrete barriers on either side.
The traffic was restricted to 50 which I guess is somewhat less dangerous than 70.

She was wearing an orange HiVis jacket but no helmet and I saw white ear pods. Shock

I alerted the police (as did many other drivers, I was told) so hopefully she's been intercepted safely.

Im just posting to see if anyone actually saw her get rescued.

On a motorway with no helmet? Is she mad?

MistyMinge2 · 12/10/2019 09:39

Oh my god what was she thinking?! My heart flips when I see cyclists on busy A roads, but a motorway......

Is it even legal to cycle on a motorway?

itsgettingweird · 12/10/2019 09:52

I didn't think it was legal to cycle on a motorway.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 12/10/2019 10:30

It's not legal to cycle on a motorway. What a crazy person!

BlueCornsihPixie · 12/10/2019 10:34

If they'd been hit you would have known about it by now, i know that sounds callous but they will be safe.

Presumably they didn't mean to be cycling on the motorway? Must have been terrifying for them though

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/10/2019 11:15

Must have been unnerving to see. They should have been picked up pretty sharpish by the police, cameras are well monitored on motorways. I remember when half the Sri-Lankan Commonwealth Games team cycling team were training down the hard shoulder of the M74 - it wasn’t more than about half an hour after being sighted before they were stopped and told it was illegal.

Windydaysuponus · 12/10/2019 11:17

When I first moved to my current address, first day off to work I passed a unicyclist on a 50 mph dual carriageway!
Yanbu to be horrified op!

treesurgery · 12/10/2019 13:52

A few months ago I was driving on the M6 toll in Staffordshire and a group of young boys were playing ‘chicken’, running out from under one of the central reservation bridge supports. It frightened me to death and was shocking to see. I slowed down, but traffic behind me, who presumably hadn’t seen the boys, started overtaking. Fortunately, none of the boys were hit at the time I passed, but were still on the central reservation.
Some people’s behaviour is just unbelievable.

FiveHoursSleep · 12/10/2019 13:56

DH and I once ( about 17 years ago- DD1 was a baby) saw 4-5 young teen boys cycling the wrong way on the M25. No helmets and completely unconcerned.
Apparently lots of people called the police about them too. I'd like to hope their parents had been horrified when they were taken home!

SilverySurfer · 12/10/2019 16:14

Last time I was on a motorway a man had parked on the hard shoulder, he opened the boot, got out a prayer mat, placed it on the ground behind his car and began praying Shock

TrickorWheat · 12/10/2019 16:16

Shock I hope they are safe.

stucknoue · 12/10/2019 16:57

I've seen lots of pedestrians too, crazy people out there. People don't take safety seriously

Milkstick · 12/10/2019 17:35

@treesurgery hazard lights would have given them more of an inkling that there was something up. Hopefully you'll not be in that situ again, but that's what I would have done (if I were to drive on a motorway which I avoid at all costs).

treesurgery · 12/10/2019 23:57

@Milkstick
You’re absolutely right. But, it all happened within seconds and I must admit, the thought of using hazard lights didn’t even occur to me. Hopefully, I’ll not experience anything like that again.

Milkstick · 13/10/2019 02:24

@treesurgery at motorway speeds it's a different ball game isn't it! I never use my horn because my hands and brain are busy with the driving in situations like that. After a close call at a dicey junction the other day I decided I want some sort of jack plugging into my neck that connects to it because nobody can hear me yelling at them... 😁

Boristhecats · 13/10/2019 05:56

My husband and I were on the way back from London one night. When we realised there was a car coming at us on the wrong side of the motorway. We only just managed to get out of the way in time. They were driving really fast. It was really scary

treesurgery · 14/10/2019 00:21

@Boristhecats
That must have been horrendous. Especially in the dark, when it takes your brain a second or two longer to figure out what’s actually happening. You see these things but you just can’t actually believe your eyes.
