Exterior housepainting at this time of year OK or not?

The outside of our house needs repainting - walls as well as frames etc. Someone has quoted but seems to think it's OK to start now. I've been told (by a more expensive quote) that you can't paint houses at this itme of year as the weather is too variable and even if its dry the cold might affect the paint.
Does anyone know if this is true?

We've been told that previously and there was a warning on the paint tin to say to only do it if it would be above a particular temperature. Don't know if that was a particular type of paint though.

Thanks @Cracklycaramel.
Anyone else know anything about this? In the decorating trade or have DPs who are? I really don't want to spend ££££ on a paint job that won;t last because it's the wrong time of year, but if it makes no difference, would be good to have it done for Christmas.

Don't say that! I have a tiny patch of render I need to do. I ran out of paint at end of summer holidays and haven't got round to doing it. Looks a bloody mess!
I think it's if it's below 10 degrees and rain forecast that you can't paint in....I've assumed that if I paint on a nice day that I'd be ok...
