Is any supermarket own brand as nice as Philadelphia?

There are many many products out there where I find the supermarket own brand to be just as good as the original.

But I've never found a substitute for Philadelphia, they are always a bit grainy in comparison.

Should I give up and pay Philadelphia prices, or does anyone have any recommendations?

I prefer the Sainsburys organic to philly. It is lovely and smooth.

CherryBathBomb · 08/10/2019 21:07

The one in aldi is nice!

ThePallidBustOfPallas · 08/10/2019 21:09

Lidl 'Goldessa' is, in my opinion anyway, actually better than Philadelphia and at 55p certainly more realistically priced.

isabellerossignol · 08/10/2019 21:26

Unfortunately I don't have access to Aldi, which is a source of much regret!

But I'll certainly give the other two suggestions a go. I've tried Sainsburys own brand but have never tried the organic range, so I'll give that a go. And the Lidl. At 55p that's certainly sounding appealing Smile

I actually prefer the ASDA smartprice one!

I think that the Waitrose own brand is the very best of the bunch - actually tastes of something, and is quite thick as in solid rather than goopy.

homemadecommunistrussia · 08/10/2019 21:39

Yes, all of them. Philadelphia is now slimy and not good.
Waitrose is especially good. M&s do a lovely one wrapped in foil, but it's not a cheap option.

Philadelphia has completely unnecessary additional ingredients (locust bean gum, off the top of my head). Supermarket own brand full fat tends to just be pure cream cheese - much better!

namechange5575 · 08/10/2019 21:44

Waitrose is much much nicer than Philadelphia.

Singlenotsingle · 08/10/2019 21:50

I vote for Lidl. It's delicious and creamy.

isabellerossignol · 08/10/2019 21:58

There's no Waitrose here either. Sad I'm so deprived.

I didn't know Philadelphia had added nasty stuff. I'm sure it didn't used to? Last time I checked the ingredients was years ago admittedly, because it never occurred to me that it would change.

Tesco own brand is very nice, better than Philadelphia IMO as it’s thicker and less watery

TheVanguardSix · 08/10/2019 22:01

If you ever shop online with Ocado, you can get the Waitrose essential one (I know you’re not near a Waitrose). It really is the best (regular, NOT the reduced fat version).

Mac47 · 08/10/2019 22:06

Morrisons used to be lovely, though not shopped there in years, so may have changed. Was better than Philadelphia imo.

purplerainpurplerain · 08/10/2019 22:09

Morrison's light soft cheese with black pepper is amazing.

FrenchBoule · 08/10/2019 22:29

Any supermarket brand lasts longer than philadelphia. Best value is asda

cricketmum84 · 08/10/2019 22:35

Another vote for Lidl's here too. Lovely and creamy and makes an excellent no bake cheesecake.

FamilyOhNo · 08/10/2019 22:39

Lidl here too. Definitely as good as Philadelphia.

I don’t like tesco own brand.
