Housemaid's knee and other ailments that should have died out

Today I woke up with my knee all weirdy and stiff. It was totally fine yesterday and I haven't knocked it or anything. But it was too sore for the gym.

Dr Google informs me that I have housemaid's knee.

I mean, really?! Wtf? I am not an apple cheeked Edwardian scullery girl.

What other ailments sound ridiculously old fashioned to you? And will someone please make me feel better by telling me that they have the King's Evil?

Gout

DH had Gamekeeper's thumb.

He wrenched it back skiing (well, falling...)

CuckooCuckooClock · 07/10/2019 20:59

Dh has housemaids knee too. He bought some special knee pads so he can scrub the floors in comfort

I had housemaids knee as a child. I’d been kneeling in the floor and then felt a sudden sharp pain. I thought I’d knelt on a drawing pin. The next day, I couldn’t bend it. It was embarrassing as I had to sit on a chair during assembly and all the other kids used to stare at me.

It takes a few weeks to get better, I’m afraid.

IncognitaIgnorama · 07/10/2019 21:02

Pleurisy always sounds weirdly Victorian - though sadly hasn't been confined to history Angry

Stravapalava · 07/10/2019 21:03

My DH gets golfer's elbow (the other side from tennis elbow!) He's not sporty in the slightest so it made me chuckle.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 07/10/2019 21:06

Gamekeepers thumb?!

Okay that did make me feel better. Who knew?

I had housemaid's knee a few years back. Nearly choked when the very dashing locum go asked me in total innocence if I had spent a lot of time on my knees over the weekend Blush Grin

i hadn't

FairyJuice · 07/10/2019 21:08

Also, you don't hear of lumbago too much anymore, though I think that was just a catch-all for undetermined back pain wasn't it?

DarrellMakepeace · 07/10/2019 21:10

I have a Baker's cyst on the back of my knee

FurForksSake · 07/10/2019 21:10

Influenza, it can try and sound all hip calling itself 'flu, but we know.

EskewedBeef · 07/10/2019 21:11

I know a woman who has dropsy.

frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 07/10/2019 21:11

Nurses finger.... aka mallet finger.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 07/10/2019 21:12

Yep, lumbago and pleurisy both good ones.

What is a Bakers cyst, or don't I want to know......

Quinsy.

PierreBezukov · 07/10/2019 21:13

Scurvy still exists. Not very common but there have been recent incidences in the UK.

EskewedBeef · 07/10/2019 21:13

Shingles is one that sounds like it should have been given a more modern name by now. It sounds like a Dickensian guttersnipe.

Leah2005 · 07/10/2019 21:13

Bartolin cyst is surely worse?!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/10/2019 21:14

Earlier this year my DDs had Scarlet Fever. I couldn't believe it when the doctor told me, it sounded so Victorian. I was worried about Measles! (Despite them being vaccinated)

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/10/2019 21:16

DS was born with a trigger finger.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 07/10/2019 21:27

Dropsy! Quinsy! Good god, you are all properly from about 1874.

Off to google trigger finger and nurses finger.....

OP posts:
JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 07/10/2019 21:29

Aw Toasty just looked up trigger finger. Poor mite. Is he okay now?

OP posts:
JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 07/10/2019 21:31

Although nurse's finger just brought up memes of NHS staff giving the finger Grin and Google also suggested I might like to search for Prince Charles.

The mind boggles.....

Policeman’s heel for me, ironic since Dh is the copper here!
